Bird lands on Sanders's podium in Portland

Portland literally “put a bird on it” at a Bernie Sanders rally in Oregon on Monday.

A bird landed on the Democratic presidential candidate's podium during his speech, and the crowd went wild.

“That bird really is a dove asking us for world peace,” Sanders said.

The “put a bird on it” slogan was made famous by the sketch comedy show “Portlandia.”

I was lucky enough to be there today with my daughter. As Bernie said, it was symbolic! And then he said the bit about the dove. What he actually said was something about it being symbolic, and then "that bird was really a dove" .... It was pretty neat. The bird sat on the podium for a good 10-15 seconds.

Do you have an idea how big the MODA Center is? Seating Capacity = just shy of 20,000. What are the chances?

In Italy (and many other places) tradition has it that when a bird lingers around you like that, it's the soul of someone who just passed away and wanted to see you one last time.

Whether it's true, who can say. But I can tell you that's been the case in my experience a number of times (grandma, a close friend, a dear neighbor, etc).

So whoever you are, watch over our friend Bernie. And God speed.

38. Canary in the coal mine?
Fri Mar 25, 2016, 06:25 PM
Mar 2016

Trying to tell BS it's time to get out?

Life for an actual canary in a coal mine could be described in three words: "short but meaningful." Early coal mines did not feature ventilation systems, so legend has it that miners would bring a caged canary into new coal seams. Canaries are especially sensitive to methane and carbon monoxide, which made them ideal for detecting any dangerous gas build-ups. As long as the bird kept singing, the miners knew their air supply was safe. A dead canary signaled an immediate evacuation.

Symbolic Meaning Of the Sparrow

As a worker, the sparrow teaches us to be vigilant, hard-working, and productive. In the wild, these birds are constantly working to ensure the comfort in their lives, collecting food and gathering. If we want to live happy and bountiful lives, the sparrow animal guide stresses the need for us to keep from being idle. We must work for what we want. By accomplishing things that we can be proud of, we will also continue to boost our self-esteem and sense of worth. The sparrow symbolism are also a wonderful symbol of protection and communal involvement, as they achieve their power through strength of numbers. Sparrows are not independent birds, but that is not to say that they are desperate or needy. On the contrary, these birds can be fierce in their own little way. They care very deeply for their community, and thus see the benefits of working together for common causes. The members of the clan teach each other to cooperate and evenly share responsibilities – something that we could all learn a lot from.

On a HD video, I saw two wing bars and finch-like pale bill. So I assumed female house sparrow but something wasn't right about the wing feathers on the back. On another FB post, i saw someone ID it as a house finch. That's when I hit myself on the head.
