Low-Flying Government Helicopter To Measure Radiation In Boston Area
Source: CBS
Heads up, Boston: A helicopter will be flying around the city at altitudes as low as 150 feet this week, but officials say theres no cause for concern.
The National Nuclear Security Administration announced in a statement that from Tuesday through Friday, a low-flying helicopter will be measuring naturally occurring background radiation over an area covering 13 square miles.
<snip>
The flyovers will be completed days before the Boston Marathon on April 18. Theres no specific mention of the marathon in the official statement, but the government has been measuring radiation over Boston just before the race for the past several years.
The NNSA says its making a public announcement about the flyover so that residents wont be alarmed.

(170 posts)at least in my little slice of heaven it's normal to hear choppers overhead looking for pot growers.
they can call it what they want but no one else runs a chopper that late at night.
I smell other reasons.

(10,138 posts)Unfortunately, it is the "after" that one needs to worry about.
My father was a merchant marine (mostly tankers, some cargo). Any time they came into a large city, all the radiation alarms would be disabled since the natural background radiation of the city would set them off.
