Bernie Sanders Rallies 27,000 In Manhattan

NEW YORK -- It was one of the largest rallies in a campaign full of them, as what Sen. Bernie Sanders's campaign claimed to be more than 27,000 people crowded into Washington Square Park to hear the candidate speak. The presidential candidate, joined by his wife Jane, seemed taken by emotion when he saw the size of the gathering.
"Jane and I left New York City when we were kids it is great to be back," said Sanders.
The venue, with the candidate framed under the iconic 124-year-old marble arch, resonated with the history of American protest. It had been packed before for gay rights rallies, anti-war marches, and protests after the death of a black Staten Island man named Eric Garner at the hands of the NYPD.

Rival Hillary Clinton was far uptown and in a far different neighborhood Wednesday. She held a rally in Co-Op City, the huge 1970s cooperative housing development in the Bronx that is home to immigrants from nearly every continent. There were no famous faces apart from her own, and a public school chorus singing the national anthem was the only live entertainment.

(12,471 posts)They only said "thousands." Not one said tens of thousands, because there were tens of thousands there.
When I saw Bernie under the monument, tears came to my eyes. That park is like an old home to me. We used to hang out there, play chess, play guitar, sing along with others, hold rallies, listen to poets. We would even go around the corner to Mamoun's Falafel, and get a falafel and a soda and sit in the park for lunch.

(11,875 posts)Sometimes I will walk across the park to McDougal st for lunch. The nearest mamoun's to the office is on St marks though.

(58,374 posts)No one is providing a link for that 48k figure some on DU have been throwing around, and the 27k figure came straight from the Sanders campaign.
The only independent estimate I saw reported was 11,500:
http://abc7ny.com/politics/bernie-sanders-holds-big-rally-in-washington-square-park/1288865/
The rally was held at NYU, close to Sanderss base. As is typical at Sanders rallies, most of the audience was young:

The student population at New York University is 57,245. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_University NYU is a huge University. So, I would imagine the bulk of the attendees were NYU students.

(57,936 posts)We stood in line for over an hour, and Bernie volunteers or staff came around and took our names. We filled out a form. I think the Bernie campaign's numbers are probably very reliable. They may know not just how many but who attended the rally. I'm just basing this on my experience at the Los Angeles rally some months ago.
They also sometimes do the cell phone thing where people call in on their cell phones. I don't know how that works because I don't have a smart phone.

...Clinton tells CBS Katie Couric that SHE will be the Democratic nominee, and that the nomination will be sewn up by SuperTuesday...
And then...

Fast-Forward to 2016....
Jeff Berman, the Democratic front-runner's campaigns consultant said he believes Hillary can effectively secure the Democratic presidential nomination as soon as the results from Super Tuesday are in.
But then...
...Robby Mook, her campaign manager, took the long view and declared the nomination would "very likely be won in March, not February".
But then...
... her campaign is now taking an even longer view, with April now being the month they hope to put Sanders away.
But then...

NYC police, whose job it is to estimate crowds and have adequate crowd control officers at the ready....they estimated 11,500. ABC News reported on it.
But y'know what? They say 27,000. Ok, whatevs...

(1,268 posts)losing ground in NY. And he apparently won't get to meet the pope? I'm not so sure that is a good decision, though I realize it is a very prestigious invitation.
RoccoR5955
(12,471 posts)This is a once in a lifetime thing. They say that he is not meeting the pope, but that could change. One never knows.
If he does indeed meet the pope, that will most certainly bring at least 10% more votes.

(12,471 posts)That place is like my old home. Judging from the crowds, there was EASILY twice that and more, as people flowed out into the streets around the park. I have NEVER in my 61 years EVER seen the park that full. I have been to many rallies there in my lifetime, and seen the park jammed. NEVER has it been as jammed as it was last night.

I can tell by the pics of the crowds, just what the crowds were.

(685 posts)Because ABC News reported the NYPD said 6,000 within the closed perimeter of the park that Secret Service set up and 5,000 on the outer perimeter. I live in NY. I know that park very well. It's not big enough to hold 28,000 people. It's just not.
But you say 28,000? Ok, whatever....there are more important issues to disagree on.

(76 posts)it pretty obvious to anyone who has closely followed other campaigns that the Clinton campaign is increasingly nervous about her chances of sewing this thing up. If Bernie loses NY the narrative will be the same as it has been that he is done and should drop out to not hurt Hillary's image. If he wins the narrative will be that he ONLY won by a small margin and that the delegate math is still near IMPOSSIBLE for him to win. I'm interested in how they are going to spin it once it's obvious he will be the nominee?

(2,807 posts)Heard enough of the bullshit from the Trumpies, the Cruzers, the bernies, etc. and are waiting for it to play out. We are not going to rallies. We are not going to see Hillary. We have heard all we need to hear. No more debates are needed. Just letting it play out.
No stress here. Not gonna snap.
Good luck with that meme.

(5,811 posts)or listen to the daily dribble. However I do enjoy a funny read. Most of it is pretty silly. The MSM are treating this very important election like a reality TV show. The good news is I'm a registered voter and I vote in every election. Everyone in my family in NY is voting 4 HRC and the same is true for family in CA. So we're good
