First Zika death on US soil reported in Puerto Rico

Source: The Telegraph

The first Zika-related death on US soil was reported Friday on the island of Puerto Rico, raising new concerns about the dangers of the mosquito-borne virus.

The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the death resulted from Zika, which is better known for causing birth defects and typically generates only mild symptoms in adults.

"The patient died of complications related to severe thrombocytopenia," a poor clotting condition related to a low number of platelets in the blood, the CDC said.

"Although Zika virus-associated deaths are rare, the first identified death in Puerto Rico highlights the possibility of severe cases, as well as the need for continued outreach to raise health care providers' awareness of complications that might lead to severe disease or death," the CDC said.

I want my pregnant daughter to wear a gigantic screen, that billows around her from head to toe.

Hopefully we won't see a spread into New England for a long while, so she will be safe, but I wouldn't wish the tragedy of a microcephalic infant on any woman.
