An American serviceman has been killed in combat in Iraq, officials said Tuesday.
The U.S.-led coalition issued a statement saying one of its service members died in northern Iraq on Tuesday as "a result of enemy fire."
It did not specify the victim's nationality, but Defense Secretary Ash Carter confirmed that an American serviceman died near the Iraqi city of Irbil.
"It is a combat death," Carter told reporters in Germany, according to The Associated Press.

(33,252 posts)they are working with the Peshmerga as close-combat advisors against ISIL.
do we walk away from the Kurds and the other religious minorities (for instance the remnant Yazidi) and leave them to fight these Sunni fanatics alone? it takes a long time to climb out of a trench as deep as the one Bush Jr. dug.

(18,998 posts)And I don't believe anything they say.
Their stated goal is to get rid of Assad because it was one of the countries the neocons wanted to overthrow and that goal has not changed just because the president did change to a Dem.
I am sick of our modeling in the world and think it needs to stop...and tired of the excuses.

(33,252 posts)and this was in combat between the kurds and ISIL. the "meddling" is nowhere near over, even if Sanders becomes POTUS. that's just reality. I bet Obama's sick of it too.
so, let me understand: you don't believe that this soldier died? or you don't believe the larger policy goals are being stated honestly?
zeemike
(18,998 posts)The policy goals are what the neocons said they were...the overthrow of 7 countries in 5 years...the timeline was over optimistic but the goal still stands.
And you might be right, it may continue even with Sanders because the president is not the real power in the world.
But unless we break the chain of the status quo nothing will change.

But yes, we should all just glory in the war, and perhaps we will if we take a trip to room 101 and see the rat cage.

(22,974 posts)We have special ops people on the ground helping the Kurdish peshmerga fight fucking ISIS. This is a valid use of our very courageous special ops soldiers & sailors. ISIS must be destroyed and prevented from inflicting more genocide on innocent people.

(10,274 posts)An American service member was killed in Iraq as a result of enemy fire about thirty kilometers north of Mosul, Pentagon officials confirmed Tuesday.
The service member was a Navy SEAL, a U.S. defense official told CNN, though the SEAL's rank is still unclear.
The person was an adviser to Kurdish Peshmerga forces that are fighting ISIS and was killed during an ISIS assault "on a Peshmerga position approximately three to five kilometers behind the forward line of troops," Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said Tuesday in a statement.
The Pentagon will provide additional information on the service member's identity after next of kin have been notified.
The U.S. responded with F-15s and drones which dropped more than 20 bombs, according to a U.S. official.

The death is the third U.S. combat casualty since the U.S. redeployed forces to Iraq in the summer of 2014 to adviser local forces and conduct special operations against ISIS.

The Navy SEAL killed in Iraq on Tuesday was identified as Charlie Keating IV, a former Phoenix high school star distance runner and the grandson of the late Arizona financier involved in the 1980s savings and loan scandal.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced Keating died in an Islamic State group attack near the city of Irbil.
He's the third American serviceman to die in combat in Iraq since the U.S.-led coalition launched its campaign against the Islamic State in the summer of 2014, according to military officials.
Ducey ordered all state flags be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset Wednesday in honor of Keating, who also was the cousin of former Olympic swimming champion Gary Hall Jr.
