A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the abduction and murder of an 11-year-old girl from the Navajo Nation after her body was found near the famed Shiprock monument in New Mexico, PEOPLE confirms.

Federal officials arrested Tom Begaye, of Waterflow, on Tuesday, just hours after Ashlynne Mike's body was found a few miles south of the famed monument, FBI Albuquerque spokesperson Frank Fisher tells PEOPLE.

Fisher says no further information will be released until after Begaye appears in court on Wednesday.

The arrest followed an intense search for Ashlynne after she and her 9-year-old brother went missing near their Fruitland home on Monday.

SHIPROCK, N.M. — A stranger who lured 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike into his van on Monday with promises of watching a movie instead walked her into the hills of a remote area of the Navajo Nation, a place known for its breathtaking views and a monolithic rock outcropping that stands as a beacon for miles.

As the sun faded, the man returned alone, with a crowbar tucked in his jacket. The girl was nowhere to be seen.

The girl’s 9-year-old brother, who had jumped into the van hoping to protect her, was now distraught and scared. The man drove him toward a highway, and then told him to get out.

Alone in the desert, the boy started to run, and kept running, toward the lights of a distant car, until a passer-by scooped him up and took him to police.

A criminal complaint filed in federal court Wednesday offers new details about the kidnapping, sexual assault and killing of 11-year-old Ashlynne Mike.

Authorities were led to Tom Begaye, 27, by a tip from one of his neighbors, according to the indictment.

Begaye told authorities he was looking for a child to have sex with Monday afternoon and picked up Ashlynne and Ian Mike, who were playing in a ditch near their home.

Ashlynne had injured her foot and agreed to get in Begaye’s car to get a ride.
