Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu reportedly set to be pushed out at AKP congress

Source: The Independent

The Turkish government is in turmoil over claims that Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is about to be replaced.

Davutoglu had a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today, which was reportedly intended to mend the ongoing rift between the two.

Now, however, it appears as though Davutoglu will be pushed out - Turkey's ruling AK Party (AKP) has declared a snap congress, and senior officials have told Reuters that Davutoglu is not planning to stand for leadership.

If Davutoglu is removed as leader, he will likely be replaced with someone more loyal to Erdogan. Davutoglu was hand-picked by the president in 2014, and was generally expected to lie low as the Erdogan pushed ahead with plans to change Turkey's political system and give himself more power.

ISTANBUL — Turkey’s prime minister stepped down Thursday, possibly paving the way for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to consolidate power amid complaints from opponents over his increasingly hard-line policies.

The decision by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to bow out of upcoming elections marks another potential step by Erdogan to move Turkey toward a presidential system and reduce the powers of parliament — further cementing the president’s authority and probably stirring more outrage from rights groups and other critics.

There is an ancient saying in South India regarding leadership styles – ‘Nothing grows under a banyan tree’. The banyan tree is a great sight with its spread-out branches, air-roots, secondary trunks, covering a vast area, giving shelter. But nothing grows under its dense foliage, and when it dies, the ground beneath its feet lies barren and scorched.

Some leaders are like banyan trees who can only tolerate followers and will not allow for the emergence of other leaders. Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan is one such leader.

According to the latest reports, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has announced that he is stepping aside, declaring a May 22 congress date to mark the party’s future leader. Erdogan was seeking his replacement. A tense meeting lasting 100 minutes between the two in the presidential palace in Ankara on Wednesday was preceded by a poignant public remark by Erdogan –”What matters is that you should not forget how you got to your post.”

The import was not lost on Davutoglu who was hand-picked by the strongman when he himself moved into the presidency in August 2014.
