Trump changes tune on tax hikes for rich Americans

Last edited Sun May 8, 2016, 08:37 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Reuters

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Sunday he is open to raising taxes on the rich, backing off his prior proposal to reduce taxes on all Americans and breaking with one of his party's core policies dating back to the 1990s.

* * *
Trump's call for higher taxes on the wealthy is a break with Republican presidential nominees who have staunchly opposed tax hikes for almost three decades. Higher taxes have been anathema to many in the party since former President George H.W. Bush infuriated fellow Republicans by abandoning a pledge not to raise taxes and agreeing to an increase as part of a 1990 budget deal.

Democrats, including presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton, have pressed for increased taxes on the wealthiest Americans for years.

Trump released a tax proposal last September that included broad tax breaks for businesses and households. He proposed reducing the highest income tax rate to 25 percent from the current 39.6 percent rate.

That is why Trump has so much support. Because he tells it like it is.

7. Tax Policy Center - Analysis of Donald Trump's Tax Plan
Sun May 8, 2016, 08:28 PM

Of course, remember that Trump is promising to balance the budget, cut taxes and maintain social security.

http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/publications/analysis-donald-trumps-tax-plan

his paper analyzes presidential candidate Donald Trump’s tax proposal. His plan would significantly reduce marginal tax rates on individuals and businesses, increase standard deduction amounts to nearly four times current levels, and curtail many tax expenditures. His proposal would cut taxes at all income levels, although the largest benefits, in dollar and percentage terms, would go to the highest-income households. The plan would reduce federal revenues by $9.5 trillion over its first decade before accounting for added interest costs or considering macroeconomic feedback effects. The plan would improve incentives to work, save, and invest. However, unless it is accompanied by very large spending cuts, it could increase the national debt by nearly 80 percent of gross domestic product by 2036, offsetting some or all of the incentive effects of the tax cuts.

which is to say, be on both sides of every issue so that everyone
hears something they want to hear

THE GHWB White House would float one way on Monday, let that sink in, then
reverse by Thursday

Different news cycles, different audience

And in my memory they were the first at the Friday night news cycle

I recall the approval of nuclear power at Seabrook, December 1989
when plans to revive or seek approval were released about 10 pm
Friday evening

No one was paying attention

The whole story is about Trump changing position, doing almost a 180, and your conclusion is that he's popular 'because he tells it like it is.'?!

Tells what? that tax rates should go up? So does that mean he was not telling it like it was until today? If he changes back again next week will he still be telling it like it is? Please tell me you're not that gullible, or I'm going to go to bed guilty about not fleecing you for some incredibly easy money.

9. Trump “Tells it Like it is”

That is the reason why he is popular. I did not say it was true. It is all about perception. You do any fact check and Trump is lying pretty much every time he talks. However, that does not fit into the narrative. Conversely, the narrative is that Hillary lies, so people will gravitate toward news that confirms this narrative even though compared to most candidates, she is on the mostly true side per poltifact. Of course, Bernie is also on the mostly truthful side per politifact.

I had written about this in December 2015, as I found the results of a poll particularly revealing. What the NBC, Telemundo, and Marist College poll showed was that more than seven in ten Republicans believe Trump “tells it like it is,” while only 25 percent find him “insulting and offensive”.

To be sure, Trump is ‘telling it like it is’ for those who believe what he says. For those who disagree with his views, the ‘like it is’ is a racist, fascist, Islamophobic, narrow-minded, and essentially false perception of reality.

In other words, Trump is ‘telling it like it is’ because he is giving voice to opinions that have only rarely been overtly adopted by influential presidential candidates or presidents.

As was noted by Chris Cilliza, each time there is a public outcry, media reaction and fact-checking vis-à-vis Trump’s ‘facts’, Trump’s stock increases in value because the perception is that the media does not ‘tell it like it is’. The net result is that “Trump’s ‘facts’ are of more value because they aren’t being filtered through the media’s liberal filter.”

Sorry for misunderstanding you.

I do have to hand it to Trump, he has developed a great tactic whereby he tells everyone what they want to hear at some point (even me) and he seems to have correctly divined that once people have heard something they like they're foolish enough to believe that they're sure get what they were promised even if they expect him to let down others to do so. OMG, I've just realized that he's the political equivalent of Mall Santa...

We don't have any way of knowing when he lies or is telling the truth. None!
He plays it to win and will say anything to win. He has zero integrity.

One thing we do know for sure, he is a narcissist and probably borderline personality disorder. He is unfit to hold office of President.

What a disaster he made it this far!

... there is no way he can achieve all of his inherently inconsistent promises such as cutting taxes while also eliminating the deficit in 8 years. So, what does he do when the going gets tough? He blames someone: Muslims, minorities, the media, women, etc. If you are a white male, then perhaps you might not be on the receiving end of his scapegoating, but otherwise, you are fair game to be blamed for Trump's inevitable failure.
