Texas Republicans Inch Closer to Secession

Source: MoJo

If the nationalists get their way, this November might be the last time Texans vote for a US president.

On Wednesday, the Platform Committee of the Texas Republican Party voted to put a Texas independence resolution up for a vote at this week's GOP convention, according to a press release from the pro-secession Texas Nationalist Movement. The resolution calls for allowing voters to decide whether the Lone Star State should become an independent nation.

Texas was, in fact, its own country for nine years before joining the United States in 1845, and while the idea of returning to independence has never been taken seriously by most people, it remains popular as a romantic notion and marketing hook. Lone Star beer is the "national beer of Texas." Texas Monthly is the "national magazine of Texas." In a 2009 rally, then-Governor Rick Perry hinted that the state could secede if "Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people." He later backed off of the idea. (Representatives of the state GOP and Texas Nationalist Movement could not be reached for comment.)

The Texas Nationalist Movement, once considered a quixotic fringe group, has added hundreds of members in the years since the election of Barack Obama. According to the Houston Chronicle's Dylan Baddour, at least 10 county GOP chapters are coming to the convention supporting independence resolutions. But this will be the first time in the state's 171-year history that they will actually vote on one. It's very unlikely to win. Then again, that's what people said about Donald Trump.

Hey that's fine Texas, you can leave. But we want a refund for all the Federal money spent on you since Reconstruction. Oh, and we want all of our federal property back (military assets for example), and if you can't give it back (like national parks) then you have to pay us fair market value.

Do that and you can leave OK?

After HRC wins in November and a Democrat majority is seated in the Senate, a replacement SCOTUS will be seated. By 2020 another GOP appointed SCOTUS and possibly one Democrat appointment will retire. All of those gerrymandered congressional district will start disappearing in a couple of years and Citizens United will be a passing bad memory. The 2020 census will change many congressional districts, and the 2022 midterms will bring about a huge change in the make-up of Congress. Sanity will once again return to TX and those nuts can go gently into the night. Might as well because they will have no say anyway.

Having a black man in the White House has done wonders to bringing out the worst in this country. The really disheartening piece of all this is that the people of Texas, while being played for fools and blinded by hate, keep electing these evil charlatans.

This state and this country should be truly ashamed.

If somehow this does make the ballot initiative it will be interesting to see just how much detail will be paid to how much money Texas will be forfeiting.

Fuck the people, but the rich do not want to lose out on profit. Secession = reduction in bottom line.

While racism, fundamentalism, and poverty is BIG in the rural regions,
Texas has some pretty Liberal urban areas. Austin ROCKS.
I've traveled and worked in Texas. The state is beautiful and belongs to us all.
It would be a shame to just throw it away.

Like most places in the United States, you can find what you look for.
If it is bigotry, hate, and division you are looking for, you can find that.
If it is beauty, nature, and enlightenment you are looking for, you can find that too.
If is is great seafood, you can find that too in Galveston (yum).

My Liberal FDR New Deal Pro-LABOR roots are in rural Texas (my parents) close to where Bill Moyers grew up. Where would we be without greats like Molly Ivins, Jim Highlighter, Ann Richards, LBJ and other great Texans who have contributed so much to our country.

I've found Texas Liberals to be courageous, sharp tongued, intelligent, current, and unafraid to share their Liberal beliefs, like this guy:

Photo taken from across the street from the Governor's Mansion

There will always be those few crazies in Texas (or California, or The South, or The North, or Idaho) who want to secede, and their counterparts screaming for them to go.
I belong to none of these, and just shake my head.

I have been fortunate enough to have traveled, lived and worked in most areas of these United States (Except New England). I want to keep them all, and solve our problems together.

BTW: There are reliable predictions that Texas WILL "turn Blue" in the near future.
I wouldn't want to throw away those Blue votes.

So by all means leave, don't let the proverbial door hit you in the ******s, and while its doing that if you vote to do this this little thing, all of your votes for senate, house and yes even the racist fascist called drumpf will be nullified since you did just voted
yourselves to leave this country called the United States, and by the way, we want all of our money, military hardware, everything back, education money, everything, airport improvement money, radar installations everything-----------you are on your own------------------see ya -------------------hee haw

And when your done, build a wall, because we the sane will have to see how your passports requirements work, because Louis Gohmert and the other elected officials that I can't put on this thread will have to have a back ground check performed, and they will be the first one(s) to be refused access to this side of the line, because need to check for ID's because we will not know how many idiots want to cross the border .................

Perry is just some RW asshole like many Texas politician, saying inflammatory shite about whatever he thinks will connect with Bubba. Most Texans love America, are very proud to be an American, and would not even think of secession.

Support is rarely any higher than 25%, roughly the same percentage that still supported Cheney at the end of his second term. You can get 25% of the public to vote for anything.
