Germany says Russia probably behind cyber attack on Bundestag

Source: Reuters Canada

Fri May 13, 2016 7:37am EDT

BERLIN (Reuters) - Russian intelligence agencies were probably responsible for a massive cyber attack on Germany's lower house of parliament last year which forced its computer systems to be shut down for days, Germany's domestic intelligence agency said on Friday.

The agency, known as the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), said a hacker group known as "Sofacy" was behind the attack.

"The BfV has indications that it is being steered by the Russian state and has been monitoring it for years," the agency said in a statement.

The unusually strong comments come at a time when relations between Berlin and Moscow have sunk to their lowest point since the end of the Cold War following Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea and its intervention in Syria.

So sad. I would hope that Democrats would attempt to be more educated than Republicans, but I see every day that that is not true. Well, education IS hard!

Snowden worked for the NSA, so he may have peripheral knowledge but that is very unlikely imo. He only knows what the NSA was doing a couple years ago

Thanks for clearing things up. Usually foreign intelligence workers don't get access to the secrets of the country they defect to. But I can see how playing patty-cake would change that equation. Putin obviously would trust a known whistle blower with all of Russia's secrets after a game of patty-cake

Snowden and Greenwald publish truth. If it is true that Russians hacked German politicians, why would they denounce the finding?
