CWA union says it faced SWAT team armed with automatic weapons after uncovering massive Verizon offshoring operation in Philippines
Photos and videos show what union reps say are armed police and a SWAT team "intimidating" them in the Philippines
The union that is on strike against corporate telecommunications giant Verizon alleges that its representatives were confronted by a heavily armed SWAT team in the Philippines, where it says it discovered undeclared offshore operations. Verizon strongly denies the accusations.
Chris Shelton, president of Communications Workers of America, or CWA, says his union was contacted by call center workers in the Philippines who work for Verizon. CWA says it sent four representatives to the Philippines this week, where they discovered that the extent to which Verizon is offshoring work is far beyond what has previously been reported and what the company publicly has acknowledged.
CWA alleges that Verizon is offshoring U.S. customer service calls to centers in the Philippines, where workers are paid as little as $1.78 an hour. The union says that Filipino workers told it they are being forced to work overtime an extra one to two hours each day, along with another full eight-hour sixth day, and are not receiving additional overtime compensation.

Terrified that the public might find out about what has happened to the good middle-class jobs the company has shipped overseas, Verizon sent private armed security forces after peaceful CWA representatives and called in a SWAT team armed with automatic weapons, the union wrote in a statement.

(86,610 posts)that Tracphone/Net10 who are serviced by Verizon in my area has at least one call center in the Philippines. Whenever I have to call for assistance, I always have to talk to someone in the Philippines, I always ask them where they are and that's where they tell me.

Any call to customer service was useless because of the language problem. And the fact that the people had a list of 9 answers.. If you asked anything not answerable by one of those 9 answers, your were SOOL.
I got a Moto-G about 18 months ago and used REPUBLIC WIRELESS..not too bad.... but the WI-FI connections were not the greatest, especially in airports around the world and I travel a good deal..
SOoooo, I finally was trapped into Verizon, a couple months ago... because I needed a dependable phone service... That's about the only good thing... Samsung Galaxy 6s.. connects everywhere, Japan, Korea, Norway, Finland,. EVEN at EWR and JFK.. which my Republic service almost never did.
I often get a Pocket WI-FI as well....
Just waiting until my first need for customer service.....

(274 posts)AT&T Inc. began its existence as Southwestern Bell Corporation, one of seven Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOC's) created in 1983 in the divestiture of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (founded 1885, later AT&T Corp.) following the 1982 United States v. AT&T antitrust lawsuit. Southwestern Bell changed its name to SBC Communications Inc. in 1995. In 2005, SBC purchased former parent AT&T Corp. and took on its branding, with the merged entity naming itself AT&T Inc. and using the iconic AT&T Corp. logo and stock-trading symbol.
The current AT&T reconstitutes much of the former Bell System and includes ten of the original 22 Bell Operating Companies, along with the original long distance division.
"The current AT&T reconstitutes much of the former Bell System and includes ten of the original 22 Bell Operating Companies" They manipulate the public with different names, but the Oligarchy and their pawns write the laws and MSM feeds of the crooks and reports accordingly.

(1,258 posts)Apparently over time Southwest Bell swallowed up a huge chunk of ma-bell. Except now it isn't regulated like it used to be.
Of course.

(3,919 posts)been with verizon wireless for 20 years and recently began thinking about moving on to something with a conscience - i.e. credo. my decision is made - fawkem, the greedy slime.
Not sure why anyone would be at all surprised that Verizon or any other company is and has been offshoring jobs.
It's been going on for quite a while for the vast majority of companies in this country. No one by the 1% like it.
Our so called leaders might protest it, but in the end they enable it. That is the real issue here. Also, why I'm not voting for Clinton. Although, I'm in a very blue state so won't matter in the general election.
The swat team response is a whole different case, and a major over reaction by those in power.

I now worry what's going to happen to our Health Care coverage and benefits.
