Chicago Cop Who Killed Rekia Boyd Quits, Preserving His Cushy Retirement
Source: Huff Po
A Chicago police detective who in 2012 fatally shot Rekia Boyd, an unarmed black woman, resigned on Tuesday, two days before a police board hearing where he faced the possibility of being fired.
Dante Servins resignation means the department, per standard procedure, drops all disciplinary charges against him, preserving his ability to collect his pension and other retirement benefits that he would have lost if he were fired.
The unceremonious end to Servins police career caps his killing of a civilian in a case that has already seen a $4.5 million legal settlement, the first recent criminal charges in an off-duty officers killing of a civilian and his acquittal in court. That hell be allowed to keep the pension on his $97,044 annual salary was the least of the Boyds familys concerns, said Rekia Boyds brother, Martinez Sutton.

Boyds family was awarded $4.5 million in a wrongful death suit against the city years before Servin was arrested. Nearly two years after Boyds death, Servin was charged with involuntary manslaughter, making him the first officer in more than 15 years to face criminal charges in a fatal shooting.

(3,263 posts)While off-duty, detective Servin called 911 at 11:49 pm to report a loud party in Douglas Park. Later, he approached a group of four people who were walking down an alley and remonstrated with them for talking too loudly. At no point did he identify himself as a police officer. The group turned to leave and Servin fired multiple shots from a 9mm semiautomatic firearm from his car, over his shoulder, into them. One bullet hit Boyd's friend, Antonio Cross, in the hand; another hit Boyd in the back of the head and killed her.[2] Servin claimed that he mistook someone holding a cell phone to be armed with a handgun and fired.
Aftermath Edit
In November 2013, Servin was charged with involuntary manslaughter,[3] but was cleared of all charges on April 20, 2015, by Judge Dennis J. Porter in a rare directed verdict.[4]
