Fewer Kids Could Receive Free School Meals Under House Bill

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republicans are considering legislation that could lower the number of students receiving free and reduced-price meals at school.

Legislation debated by the House Education and Workforce Committee on Wednesday aims to save money by scaling back the number of schools in which all students receive free or reduced meals.

A proposed Republican amendment to the bill would go even further, allowing a trial period of so-called block grants for school meals in three states. That would mean those states wouldn't receive unlimited federal dollars for students who qualify for the free and reduced-price lunches.

Hunger and nutrition advocates from the American Academy of Pediatrics to the American Heart Association have criticized the legislation.

free meals but for some schools that means everyone.

I would like to see this defeated and will be watching to see if President Obama vetoes it.

... qualified. Every year families/schools had to waste time and energy on filling out forms and providing proof to qualify. And every year, most students DID qualify. The change of providing free/reduced lunch to all students made sense, saved time and money, and insured that no children went hungry.
The GOP wants to take us backwards.

dropped to when they are afraid some child will get a free lunch.

Hot lunch was one of the best programs we have ever had.

If we do not care about the children - who do we care about?

The truth is that the GOP doesn't care if children are born, but they know that the stupid "Christian" fanatics care!

So, they play the game by pretending to be pro-life, and the "Christians" believe every word of it!

Ever wonder why the "Christians" never seem to question when their pro-fetus heroes, are hell bent on cutting programs that help children?

Billions spent for weapons that in some cases the Pentagon doesn't want and which often do not perform, and they have the balls to steal school kids' lunch money to pay for it.

It's money laundering straight up. Tax money is diverted from meaningfully helping tax payers and their communities. Instead it goes to bloated weapons contractors who in turn send part of it to fund the campaigns of those self same legislators.

And the Senators and Congressmen do have to pay. (The Senators have their own dining room, separate from the rabble in the House.) They're not free -- it's just that they have to pay about a third of what it'd cost to eat in a comparable restaurant in the city.

both the House and Senate have cafeterias. I'm fairly sure it isn't free but I'm not sure if they have accounts or pay cash.

receives a free lunch. the unemployment rate and low paying wages & a growling belly are not the children's fault.

how can legislators be so mean hearted and greedy? disgusting.

we must turn the house and the senate to democratic majorities.

every one of us can write a letter or call the whitehouse and plead with michelle to tell the president to veto this bill if it passes.
