Israel set to form 'most right-wing government in history'
Source: yahoo
Jerusalem (AFP) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu looked set to form the "most right-wing" government in Israeli history on Thursday, with Avigdor Lieberman, a hardliner loathed by Palestinians, expected to join as defence minister.
Netanyahu's allies were set for fresh negotiations with representatives of Lieberman's far-right Yisrael Beitenu party to try to entice it to join the governing coalition and boost its currently wafer-thin majority in parliament.
Leaks to the Israeli media from both sides said a deal was close to being finalised.
Yisrael Beitenu holds six of the 120 seats in parliament and its entry into government would be a major boost for Netanyahu, who has not concealed his ambition to expand on the coalition's current 61 seats.
The return to government of Lieberman, who served as foreign minister under Netanyahu from 2009 to 2012 and again from 2013 to 2015, could raise international concern about his government's policies -- especially on the conflict with the Palestinians.

Source: The Forward
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Sunday she would take the relationship between the U.S. and Israel to the next level, but warned that solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would not be enough to stabilize the entire region.
I would extend an invitation to the Israeli prime minister to come to the United States, Clinton said at the Saban Forum in Washington hosted by the Brookings Institution when asked about her first day in the White House, to work toward very much strengthening and intensifying our relationship on military matters.
The one-time senator from New York and former Obama secretary of state said she should would not retreat from attempting to broker Israeli-Palestinian peace, as Obama has since the collapse of Israeli-Palestinian talks in 2014.
Clinton called on Arab leaders to revive the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative to include recognition of Israel as a Jewish state, a key Israeli demand of the Palestinians. She also said that one of her first acts would be to invite the Israeli prime minister to visit within the first month.

(29,876 posts)Last Wednesday night, as he stood on a hilltop outside the Israeli town of Sderot and watched the bombardment of Gaza on the plain below, a Danish newspaper reporter snapped an iPhone photo of about a dozen locals who cheered on their military from plastic chairs while eating popcorn.
Allan Sorensen, a veteran Middle East correspondent for Denmarks Kristeligt Dagblad, then uploaded the image to Twitter with a sardonic caption that described the macabre scene as Sderot cinema.
The image of the Israeli spectators was taken after 9 p.m. local time on Wednesday, the reporter said, about the same time that what was intended to be a precision strike from Israels military killed at least eight of their Palestinian neighbors, seated in similar plastic chairs at a beachside cafe in Gaza, waiting to watch the World Cup semifinal between Argentina and the Netherlands.
As his image reverberated around the social network, where it was shared more than 10,000 times, the reporter was surprised by the response. It was, he said in a telephone interview from Israel, nothing new. Similar scenes, of Israeli spectators gathered on the high ground above Gaza to view the destruction below, were documented in a Times of London article and a video report from Denmarks TV2 during Operation Cast Lead in 2009.
