BALTIMORE (AP) In a tragic start to Preakness day, two horses have died at Pimlico Race Course and a jockey broke a collarbone after a spill on a damp, rainy day.
Pramedya broke down around the turn in the fourth race Saturday, tumbled to the ground as jockey Daniel Centeno was thrown to the turf. Pimlico racing officials said the 4-year-old filly was euthanized on the track after breaking her left front cannon bone.
Centeno was driven off in ambulance. Officials said he broke his right collarbone.
In the opening race of the day, Homeboykris collapsed and died after winning and having his picture taken in the winner's circle. Track officials believe the 9-year-old gelding suffered cardiovascular collapse. ... The horse will be taken to New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania for an autopsy.

I'm no expert, but I'm surmising this is out of the ordinary.
I live just south of Washington, DC. We had pretty heavy rain here this morning. It let up about noon. I'm guessing the track will be muddy.
And though it won't forestall the angry posts from vegans, I had a hamburger for lunch. It was delicious.

(15,805 posts)BTW, what was the point of your added dig at vegans? Do you think they don't like horses or would be concerned over their deaths for sport? I don't get the connection between horses dying and you eating a hamburger, unless you're saying you would eat horsemeat, in which case that would upset me, and I'm not a vegan.

For every Secretariat there are a million "claimers' who live a miserable life at crappy tracks around the world.

(1,674 posts)Giving the same effect as cocaine, junked horses dont feel pain and their energy level increases, so they keep running on a broken leg, and get heart attacks. In the horseshow world, go to the barns at a hunter/jumper show and you will find syringes all over the place. That is why I stopped jumping and went into Dressage.
Where there is money to be won, animals are drugged to perform-horses and greyhounds.

(34,582 posts)and they are bred for speed. Lighter horses, and thus lighter (more fragile) skeletons make for faster horses. The average race horse is more fragile than Robert Griffin III

(1,674 posts)without breaking down. But them Arabs have denser bone. You are right, Thorobreds are bred for speed, but knees are not fused until 3 yrs, so it is for money the babies are sacrificed

(22,057 posts)I got more into dressage after breaking too many of my bones trying to do eventing.
The main problem with horses breaking down on the track is that they are 2-year olds---babies. Typically, horses don't start training for anything until they are 3, run and play for a year, then start more serious training at 5. A two year old has not even finished growing, their bones have not finished "fusing".
I've always had mixed feelings, being a Kentucky kid. Racing is a time honored, centuries old tradition. If you live close to a track, there are cheap, "too slow" horses to be had to go on to careers in jumping, eventing, and dressage. Yes, there are trainers doping horses, but its always a gamble as to who is going to be drug tested that day. At least they don't sell horses for dog food anymore in this country. The remaining slaughter houses were closed several years ago. Many do go to Canada or Mexico to be processed, then shipped to Europe.
I am curious about a 9 year old racing on the track. My two dressage horses were retired in their 20's, one for arthritis, the other because he broke an ankle warping around the pasture. They were happy and healthy, and loved their work. I don't think they're nearly as happy being pasture ornaments. Dressage (google is our friend), is very special communication between horse and rider. Almost reading each other's minds.

(326 posts)I love horses and have always enjoyed watching them run . . . that ended a number of years ago with Ruffian's injury and subsequent euthanizing. I cannot justify the "sport" anymore for so many reasons, of which these incidents is a very big part!

I wish I could remember the details.

(3,580 posts)It happens at all level of racing. The horse that breaks down at the track has no idea if it's the triple crown or a claiming race. The other tragedy is life after racing for so many horses. Rest in Peace, Ferdinand.
Since you mention the meal you had in a totally unrelated context, do you also post pictures of your food to Instagram?

As for your FU to vegans - I am one and this is just a sample of what we have to put up with from jerks.
So good to know who you are.

(18,868 posts)People have been racing horses for a few thousand years so I doubt it is going to stop anytime soon.
I saw the numbers of horses that die each year as a result of horse racing and it's staggering.
I think it's animal abuse. Pure and simple.

A 2-year-old quarter horse named Teller All Gone broke a front leg in a race on Sept. 3 at Ruidoso Downs Race Track in New Mexico and was euthanized. His body was then dumped in a junkyard next to an old toilet at Ruidoso, a short walk from where he had been sold at auction the previous year.

(12,081 posts)My husband and I grew up in Texas and grew up eating all kinds of meat. Then a year ago at the age of 41 he had a heart attack. When he went through the cardiac rehabilitation program and learned what meat did to the body, he instantly became a vegan. I eat much healthier than I did before but still occasionally have some turkey, chicken, or fish. I try to keep it to a minimum. It is healthier for me and I find it is a great way to protest the way animals are factory farmed in this country.
