Rolly: Bears Ears opponents posting phony fliers, letters to scare Utah Navajos

Source: PAUL ROLLY | The Salt Lake Tribune

Somebody is playing dirty tricks in San Juan County in an apparent attempt to turn American Indians against the proposed Bears Ears National Monument.

A phony news release purportedly from the Department of Interior was posted at the post office in Bluff and in several gas stations in the county, saying the Interior Department was poised to take over more than 4 million acres of the Navajo Nation Reservation.

A statement issued by Utah Dine Bikeyah (UDB), a nonprofit American Indian grass-roots organization, said the falsified Interior Department news release was accompanied by a fabricated flier supposedly from UDB that invited the public to celebrate a new Bears Ears National Monument, except Utah Navajos, who were directed to "stay away from our party."

"This is a clear attempt to turn people against a Bears Ears National Monument by spreading lies, inciting racism and impersonating federal officials," said Cynthia Wilson, UDB's community outreach coordinator. "These tactics are despicable and likely criminal."

The same people who did this are likely trying to steal all the federal land in the West for themselves, no matter the cost to democracy or the survival of the Union.

Utah attorney general confirms investigation of San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman
By DAN HARRIE | The Salt Lake Tribune Jan 16 2016

The Utah Attorney General's Office has confirmed that it has an ongoing — and long-running — criminal investigation of San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman.

The A.G. wouldn't elaborate, but the probe is believed to be a continuation of one launched in 2013 under then-Attorney General John Swallow .........

Lyman is the local official who has gained widespread attention for leading an ATV protest ride on protected federal lands in San Juan County's Recapture Canyon in 2014.

Convicted of federal misdemeanors and planning to appeal a 10-day jail sentence and $96,000 restitution bill, he has achieved something approaching hero status among some rural leaders who believe federal land management is strangling local economies. But he has been portrayed as an incendiary and reckless scofflaw by many on the other side.

....... spokeswoman Missy Larsen said, "the attorney general's office confirms that there is an open investigation."

The office declined to elaborate on the nature of the probe. .........

Judge sentences Lyman to 10 days in jail, calls ATV protest and fallout ‘a tragedy’

knows the white man speak with forked tongue..they are an amazing people, connected in so many ways to prevent rumor - and the attempt by money grubbing greedy white men....to once again steal their land and resources -

If you ever get a chance to visit the four corners and the American Indians who have concessions..chat awhile with them - they are more than willing to share their wisdom..you will find an older generation - very wise....

Or attend one of their annual dance competitions..most spectacular..

the Escalade project at the Grand Canyon - NOT - for very good reasons..and they tried to sell it - by promising jobs....NOT! - The truth be known...white man still speak with forked tongue....(btw) water resources are one of the main concerns..I love how the Prez designated so much land to National Parks...awesome....

Its way in the back of nowhere. The nearest flush toilet is 40 miles away in Blanding.

ATV people are among the heaviest users of the area. Every new National Monument makes them feel like they're being fenced in. "If we lose Bear's Ears, we'll only have 10 gazillion other acres to tear up!"

Boo hoo, yahoo.

To the privileged, equality feels like oppression.

I'm not sure who the "heaviest users" are, but I doubt it is ATV users. After all, "Its (sic) way in the back of nowhere."

no, ATVers aren't the heaviest users at any Natl Mon. that's the point they're making - National Monuments close off their access and leave it to RVers, campers, hikers. no more hunting, either.

Part of the area is already a wilderness area, Dark Canyon.

Lots of archaeology to protect in the region.
