Recordings put pressure on allies of Brazil's acting leader

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

Secretly recorded conversations hit two more key allies of Brazil's acting president Wednesday, leaving the country wondering if there are more taps that could affect the interim government after only 13 days in office.

The audios involve prominent members of the fractious Brazilian Democratic Movement Party led by Michel Temer, who took over the presidency after the Senate suspended President Dilma Rousseff pending an impeachment trial.

The first recording has Senate President Renan Calheiros proposing in a conversation with a former senator to weaken one of the key tools prosecutors have used to catch politicians and businessmen in a sweeping corruption scandal at the big state oil company Petrobras.

The second audio reveals former President Jose Sarney promising to help the same ex-senator overcome the probe into what prosecutors say was a multibillion-dollar bribery scheme involving Petrobras contracts. In it, Sarney also says "certain conditions" were negotiated with the opposition to replace Rousseff with Temer, her vice president.

Leaked Conversation Confirms Major Players in Brazil Coup: What Impact Will It Have?
Mark Weisbrot Co-Director, Center for Economic and Policy Research, Washington, D.C.

Transcripts of a recorded conversation between then Senator Romero Jucá, and former oil industry executive Sergio Machado, indicate that what many people suspected about the impeachment of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff is true: some of the most corrupt and powerful politicians in Brazil are using impeachment as a means of protecting themselves and their power. It is of course deeply ironic: Dilma, who is not accused of any corruption, is being impeached by corrupt members of Congress whose power is threatened by the unprecedented capacity that she gave prosecutors and the judiciary to go after corruption.

...........

..... international public opinion will have some impact on the interim government’s struggle for legitimacy, and perhaps even on the impeachment vote. Since the U.S. government has a major influence on the international media — more on reporting from Latin America than on other regions — the U.S. position and diplomacy will matter. Although Washington has operated quietly through “dog-whistle diplomacy,” there is little doubt that the U.S. foreign policy establishment and “national security state” currently favors the ouster of the PT government and the installation of a right-wing government that has pledged to change its foreign and commercial policy to coincide more with Washington’s own plans for the region and the world.

I will NEVER forget that during the House impeachment business,

... Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right deputy from Rio de Janeiro, dedicated his yes vote to Carlos Brilhante Ustra, the colonel who headed the Doi-Codi torture unit during the dictatorship era. Rousseff, a former guerrilla, was among those tortured. Bolsonaro’s move prompted left-wing deputy Jean Wyllys to spit towards him.

sources WON'T be passing it around to the U.S. public.

Un-bleeping-acceptable info. to hear about an acting President of a country. It totally reeks.

Here's another article referring to this appalling situation:

As it turns out, the Temer presidency may be nothing more than the latest manifestation of the US state department's implementation of yet another puppet government. We know this because earlier today, Wikileaks released evidence via a declassified cable that Brazil's new interim president was an embassy informant for US intelligence and military.

According to the whistleblowing website, Temer communicated with the US embassy in Brazil and such content would be classified as "sensitive" and "for official use only" (link)

. . .

Wikileaks brought attention to two cables, one dated January 11, 2006, the other June 21, 2006. One shows a document sent from Sao Paolo, Brazil, to - among other recipients - the US Southern Command in Miami. In it, Temer discusses the political situation in Brazil during the presidency of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

5. Brazil’s interim government is orchestrating a stunning transfer of power to the country’s elites.

The Right Marches on Brazil

new interim president Michel Temer’s motto seems to be: “Injure all at once, and perhaps, one day, return benefits little by little.” Existing social gains, especially those won by the Workers’ Party (PT), are already being eroded. His government hopes the Brazilian people will swallow this bitter pill in hopes of a vaguely defined payoff later.

The domestic popular outcry and international opposition — which could turn into a diplomatic crisis if more countries recall their ambassadors — have only accelerated this process.

Fearing that the impeachment might not stick, Temer is trying to accomplish the coup’s mission as quickly as possible: remove as many rights as he can, transfer the weight of the economic crisis from the elite to the working class, and contain the anti-corruption outcry.

6. Brazil Coup Government to Legalize Foreign Land Grabbing

Brazil Coup Government to Legalize Foreign Land Grabbing

The expected lifting of foreign land ownership will be a windfall for the timber, soy and sugar industries -- and a nightmare for campesinos.

Brazil's government plans to lift current limits on foreign ownership of agricultural land, Secretary of Investment Moreira Franco, the person behind privatizations for the new administration, announced Wednesday.

"This proposal represents the interests of an alliance between multinational agribusiness corporations, foreign pension funds and the Brazilian rural oligarchy," Maria Luisa Mendonça, director of Brazil's Network for Social Justice and Human Rights, told teleSUR. "It will increase the enormous land concentration in the country and its dependency on agricultural commodities based on mono-cropping for export."

Franco called the restriction on sales of agricultural land to foreign individuals and companies "nonsense" and said Senate-imposed interim President Michel Temer will reconsider the issue. "The government will discuss the issue, see how it can solve this. It is something completely unreasonable," added Franco.

......... The restriction on foreign ownership was adopted in 2010 by former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. ......

That would be pure evil, the whole world, except from the most grotesque scum among us, would resist this any way possible, if only there were a way to prevent it.

Someone has unleashed a true monster here with these Brazilian fascists as they kidnap the government from the people.
