Report of two F/A-18 fighter jets crashing off the east coast

OREGON INLET, NC (WAVY) The Navy confirms a mishap involving two F/A-18F Super Hornets 25 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras.
According to Petty Officer 3rd Class Joshua Canup, the report was received around 10:30am and said a Coast Guard helicopter is searching.
Naval Air Force Atlantic says two Navy ships are inbound and expected within two hours. The F/A-18F are two-seated aircraft assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron Two One One (VFA-211) based at Naval Air Station Oceana and were conducting routine training. According to LCDR Tiffani Walker, a mishap investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
Laurie Naismith with the Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) says two people have been pulled out of the water.

(2,124 posts)4 navy pilots have been pulled from the water. All are in good shape and are currently at Sentara-Norfolk for observation.

I can't imagine anyone but a commissioned officer or senior enlisted giving an official, command-endorsed statement to the media.

(1,134 posts)I'd imagine destroying $60,000,000 jets isn't something that goes over too well. I've seen waiters get fired for dropping a $30 worth of dinner plates.
