The Latest: Snyder halts some Flint water investigations

Source: WBAY, ABC affiliate in Green Bay, WI

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is calling for a halt of administrative investigations into how two state agencies dealt with the Flint drinking water crisis, after being warned they are hampering state and federal criminal probes.

Snyder’s office released letters Thursday from state Attorney General Bill Schuette and U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade. The emails raised concerns about a state police investigation of the Department of Environmental Quality’s role in the lead contamination of the city’s water supply.

Schuette also complained about inquiries targeting the state Department of Health and Human Services being conducted by the state auditor general and the department’s inspector general.

He said they could have a “chilling effect” on the criminal probes and might cause obstruction of justice.

Seems rather strange that a police agency has an investigative role - Dept. of Health, yes. Doesn't Michigan have an equivalent of a state FBI agency as other states do?

Um, no.

The only State law enforcement investigating agency is the State Police.

What state has their own F.B.I.?

From Wikipedia:

State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is a state-level detective agency in the United States. They are plainclothes agencies which usually investigate both criminal and civil cases involving the state and/or multiple jurisdictions. They also provide technical support to local agencies in the form of laboratory or record services.

An SBI is a state's equivalent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The SBIs investigate all manner of cases assigned to them by their state's laws and usually report to their state's attorney general, or in some cases to their state's governor.
