Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe criticizes DOJ, FBI for leaking investigation

Source: CBS

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe repeatedly criticized the Department of Justice and FBI for leaking the fact that he is under a federal investigation.

"It is very unfortunate that our institutions of integrity like Justice and the FBI would leak information," McAuliffe said on WTOP radio's Ask the Governor program. "They should be held to a higher standard. But listen, you live in this world, you're in politics. These things happen."

On WTOP, McAuliffe described Wang as a "fine upstanding individual" who was being "dragged through the mud because of a leak from Justice or FBI to CNN."

But while the Virginia governor and longtime Clinton ally also seemed to be trying to maintain a little distance from the businessman, he modified his initial claim on Tuesday that he didn't think he had met with Wang. On Wednesday, he said he'd encountered Wang probably "once or twice in my life."

McAuliffe has been an awesome Governor for this State. Pretending he is corrupt is major league bullshit.

Know what happens when illegal donations are made? They are returned and a fine might be assessed. There won't be criminal charges and I have seen nothing that shows McAuliife has acted improperly.

BTW, Sander's campaign is being investigated for hundreds of FEC violations. Does that make him corrupt?

That's why McAuliffe repeatedly said the news of this investigation shouldn't have been leaked.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe Invited a Chinese Donor to Hillary Clinton’s Home

by Michael Scherer , TIME

May 26, 2016, 9:39 AM EDT

A donation to the Clinton Foundation followed weeks later.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe invited the Chinese businessman whose donations to him have been named as a focus of Justice Department investigators to a 2013 fundraiser at Hillary Clinton’s personal Washington, D.C., residence.

There is no way that I believe Terry didn't remember who Wang was. Knowing and schmoozing with influential donors is his bread and butter. Does anyone believe his initial story?

http://www.fec.gov/ans/answers_general.shtml#What_are_some_other_ways_I_can_support_a_candidate
The Federal Election Campaign Act and FEC regulations include a number of provisions intended to encourage individuals to become involved in campaigns. For example, an individual can provide volunteer services to a candidate or party without considering the value of those service a contribution to the candidate or party. Individuals may also make independent expenditures supporting or opposing candidates, and may finance electioneering communications. However, both of these activities are subject to special reporting requirements. For more information on volunteering and other ways of supporting candidates, consult our Citizens Guide [PDF].
Donating to a foundation should be even easier.

People do not realize this and an investigation sounds more ominous than it should. Some leakers realize this and try to abuse their positions in order to smear by investigation.

Bad DOJ! Bad FBI!

Why McDonnell and McAuliffe comparisons are wrong

Before Robert F. McDonnell (R) became governor, not a single Virginia chief executive had been federally investigated for public corruption by the Justice Department. Over the years, the governor’s mansion, the oldest in continuous use, has housed heroes and scoundrels, racists and reformers, lifetime politicians and rookies, Southerners and Northerners, Republicans and Democrats, back-room dealers and upfront players, top-flight businessmen and lowbrow hucksters.

But until 2013, no governor had faced a federal law-enforcement probe for criminal wrongdoing.

Now, in 2016, McDonnell’s appeal of a criminal conviction is pending before the Supreme Court, and Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) may be under federal investigation for campaign irregularities, according to media reports.

This is also an interesting discussion.

On “With All Due Respect,” Mark Halperin and John Heilemann discuss the investigation into Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe for campaign contributions and what is the worst case scenario for Hillary Clinton.

http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/videos/2016-05-24/terry-mcauliffe-investigation-is-bad-news-for-the-clintons

I agree with them that Terry is innocent until proven guilty. I am concerned though that Terry pretended he didn't know who Wang was. He's too good a fundraiser for me to have ever believed he didn't know who he was and the later story where he changed his remarks backs that up. The fact he tried to distance himself from Wang worries me. This is certainly a story to keep an eye on. Hopefully it will not drag out.

If he is, then there's no there there...

From the FEC website:
however, that "green card" holders (i.e., individuals lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S.) are not considered foreign nationals and, as a result, may contribute. For additional information, consult our "Foreign Nationals" brochure
