WWII tugboat sinks at Point Richmond dock

A World War II -era Navy tugboat sank at a dock in Richmond late Sunday, leaving an oily sheen near the shore of San Pablo Bay.

The boat sprang a leak and slowly sank while tied to a pier in Point Richmond, the Coast Guard said. It leaked an unknown amount of oily black sludge into the water.

Crews from the Coast Guard and a cleanup company draped boom around the boat and a nearby nature preserve. All the oily liquid was contained in the boom around the boat, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Mike Lutz.

The 205-foot Tug Tiger was built in 1943 and had been stored for decades at the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, also known as the mothball fleet. It was being cleaned in Richmond before being taken to a salvage yard for demolition, Lutz said.
