San Jose: Raucous protests erupt outside Donald Trump rally

Source: San Jose Mercury News

SAN JOSE -- Dozens of fights broke out on the streets of downtown San Jose on Thursday night as police in riot gear struggled to keep the peace between hundreds of protesters and streams of Donald Trump fans leaving his rally at the city's convention center.

Several protesters jumped on cars of Trump supporters, while others burned red "Make America Great" hats and took selfies with the charred remains. Demonstrators waved Mexican flags as Trump supporters told them to "go back to Mexico."

About 9 p.m, there were about 200 protesters about a block away from the convention center as about 70 police in riot gear created a line around the demonstrators. Police lined up, trying to move the protesters onto the street. Police yelled, "Keep moving, keep moving. This is an unlawful assembly." Protesters tossed epithets at the officers.

Exactly who was involved in the violence and where they were from is unclear, but numerous members of the crowd were Latinos from East San Jose who said they opposed the violence but condemned Trump for touting racism.

I was happy to see it. Trump ought to get this kind of treatment wherever he goes, and much more.

You don't get anywhere being temperate and polite to racists and neofascists. A number of corporate media poohbahs and the like will bitch and moan about "incivility" and such but when this turkey gets a lot more of this treatment, he may learn to keep a civil tongue in his mouth. For all the pearl-clutching centrists and editorialists bemoaning this I'll bet a dozen activists are born from it.

People on my side don't have to put up with this crap any more!

"Freedom isn't always free, freedom needs to be fought for"

No. I have no idea where your education was obtained, but in the United States we do not engage in violence to settle political differences.

The simplest expedient to avoid election of a candidate to whom one objects is not to vote for that candidate. It is that simple.

You obviously have absolutely no historical clue as to the unbelievable irony of your statement:

"the trumpists like nazis are on the wrong side"

One of the things that the Nazis actually exploited in order to gain power was to attract hot-headed detractors to their rallies, and use the ensuing violence as an argument for why firm Nazi rule was necessary.

It was also skillfully exploited by Nixon:

You have no clue whatsoever about the subject.

You think assaulting women is good tactics? You think "fear" will shame the RW?
Do you really think "fear" will make them back down from a fight "for freedom"?

Or will they choose to escalate it?

At this rate it will not be long before people start getting killed for their "brave methods".

You can wait and see what happens when there is a huge uptick in violence & chaos if you wish, I pretty much expect it will not be good.

You don't beat someone by acting like them. This will just cause the Trump supporters to be even more angry and attack other non-violent protestors. It makes us look like we are as violent and crazy as him, or maybe even worse. Wonder how many votes the eventual Democratic nominee lost with what happened last night?

shit he espouses. That is completely understandable. But, at the same time, it's counter-productive. Engaging in verbal and physical assault of people you disagree with politically is not an effective means of protest and, in this case, probably ends up creating more Trump voters who sympathize with those being taunted.

"The crime of attending Trump rallies" - attending Hitlers rallies should have been a crime.

"Sucking the air out of Hillary's speech" - I find it telling that Hillary supporters oppose Trump protesters.

And I'm willing to bet the violence was not initiated by the anti Trump protesters.

Godwin in one. Congratulations.

Those rallies were held in Germany. In the United States, where I live, these words are in effect:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I hope this helps, but I'm getting more worried every day that it won't make any difference.

The law you quote gives protesters a right to assemble as well. Those protesters are not the Congress restricting speech they are citizens using their right to protest. No one is promised a right to be the only voice at events that are active in targeting others.

The violence is stupid, but that's a whole different thing. The protesters need to drop that stuff for more effective and theatrical actions.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The violence is stupid, but that's a whole different thing.

Just stupid? Not assault and battery, which, you know, are criminal acts?

Godwin is a trope that serves fascists by saying 'oh, don't point out the fascists'.

It was a deliberate strategy of the Nazis to attract violent protestors, as part of their argument that "order" was needed.

Donald Trump Deserves All Of The Blame For San Jose Rally Protester Violence

By Jason Easley on Fri, Jun 3rd, 2016 at 10:00 am

Donald Trump is looking to create violence with his rhetoric, and the violent anti-Trump protests in San Jose gave the presumptive Republican nominee exactly what he wanted.
....

There is only one person to blame for the violence, and that is Donald Trump.
