North Carolina high school prank upsets Latino students
Updated 5:03 pm, Saturday, June 4, 2016
MARION, N.C. (AP) A group of students at a western North Carolina high school built a wall made of boxes and blocked access to a common area, and their Latino classmates are upset.
Local media outlets report the students were allowed into McDowell High School, about 100 miles northwest of Charlotte, on Wednesday to perform a prank as a teacher supervised them.
A photo of the wall with about 30 students standing in front of it was shared on Instagram and captioned, "We built the wall first." Principal Edwin Spivey says one of the kids wanted to put a Donald Trump logo on it and was told he couldn't do that.
. . .
A school district spokesman says the students won't face any disciplinary action.

WLOS MARION, N.C. -- A photo of a senior class prank is causing some buzz at a mountain high school after it was posted on Instagram, a photo sharing app, with a caption that some found offensive.
One senior, who said she wasn't in the photo but wanted to provide some background, said the original photo depicted students gathered in front of a makeshift wall made out of stacked boxes with a kid who happened to be wearing a "Trump" shirt front and center.
She says what can't be seen is on the other side of the boxes which she says were balloons and a farewell message to the underclassmen.
When that photo was posted to Instagram, however, the caption, "We built the wall first," was added. That combined with the "Trump" shirt and she says several Latino students came up to her saying they were offended.

If you insist your act was a "joke," they can't get you.

(2,412 posts)This is a prank? It looks a lot to me like those nooses found from time to time at Ol' Miss. This is a racist event and has no place in our schools.

(61,690 posts)The Latino students will be criticized for complaining and wanting everything to be "politically correct." The perps will ask why they can't take a joke and why do they have to be so sensitive?
1. It was 30 students. Unless the rest of the school was Latino and none of the builders were Latino, it's pure WYSIATI. A judgment formed on incomplete, partial information that serves to confirm a pre-existing belief.
2. "[One builder] says what can't be seen is on the other side of the boxes which she says were balloons and a farewell message to the underclassmen." You look at the butt and it's usually not going to be the most attractive side.
3. The affair is built on a whole/part fallacy. A student posted something to Instagram. That was all that was needed for confirmation bias and the need-to-bleed mindset to kick in. "I'm oppressed, so this here is confirmation that I'm being oppressed, please don't confuse me with any more information as I display my wounds."
Similarly, another student made a reference to Trump. Now, was it serious or in jest? Good question. But looking to our hostility and judgmentalism for an answer isn't going to say anything about that student; it will, and already has, said a lot about us. Given nothing but that one line and how we wanted to interpret it, we've decided he's an enemy, stupid, and cretinous. And probably white, but for many here that's a tautology.

(35,293 posts)and we've adopted a zero-tolerance attitude towards students.
If a student is out of area administrators know. If they're in where they are banned, it's trespassing. If they do something without permission, it's a violation of the rules and will be strictly punished.
So, yes. At my school the principal approves senior pranks.
Of course, we haven't had a senior prank in years since much of the fun of senior pranks is having it be a surprise.

That's the only thing dumber than senior pranks. Although I do get it. The world today.

(6,017 posts)The whole point is that they were never allowed, yet somehow they would still happen. There were always areas that were off-limits. And there were always strict punishments. That was the entire point; they were the Seniors' harmless rebellion against the strict control of the Administration (students had no idea what the real world would be like, so it seemed reasonable at the time).

Our Chicano kids face this (kids teasing in school) everyday here in Arizona.... except where the demographics are shifted.
