Helen Chavez dies at 88

She avoided the limelight even as her husband’s public image became well known around the world. But her commitment to the idea of a union that would for the first time represent the least powerful among us never wavered.

Helen Fabela Chavez, wife of United Farm Workers union co-founder Cesar Chavez, died Monday in Bakersfield.

She was 88.

Helen Chavez “played a vital role helping her husband give birth to what became the first enduring farm workers union in U.S. history — and sustained Cesar Chavez during the 31 years he led the United Farm Workers of America,” the Cesar Chavez Foundation said in a news release.
