Mom, Off-Duty Deputy Thwart Wild Abduction of 13-Year-Old Girl in Florida

Source: NBC News

by PHIL HELSEL

A Florida mother is being praised after she thwarted a kidnapping suspect who allegedly grabbed the woman's 13-year-old daughter and tried to run out of a store Tuesday, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office was called about the attempted abduction at a Dollar General store in Hernando at 11:42 a.m., but an off-duty sheriff's deputy was outside the business and arrested Craig Bonello as he tried to flee in a vehicle, the sheriff's office said.

Bonello, 30, of Hernando, allegedly grabbed the teen and tried to drag her out of the store, but the girl's mother caught up to him and freed her after a "tug of war," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The incident was caught on a shocking video that was posted to the sheriff's office's Facebook page.

Good that the mom and the off duty cop were thinking quickly to stop it.

Makes you want to find out what the dude was planning to do with her, like if it's part of some organized crime ring and if there may be more incidents.

Absolutely scary

We almost never really hear the "why" of it. As the chief there said, this was surreal because you never see such a broad daylight/public place kind of abduction like that. it's almost like something in the guy's head just snapped.

I thought they might say whether he's tried anything like this before, but so far they haven't.

get the mental evaluation his uncle feels he needed long ago, if not any treatment. Hernando is not a prosperous area.

Let's have yet more tax breaks, pubs. Forty years now and the promised benefits haven't kicked in yet.

Usually abductions happen quickly and quietly out of view of people and to younger kids who aren't as likely to struggle or make a fuss. Once the mom was aware and had hold of the child WHY didn't he just run?

Not that I'm saying he should have gotten away, but this is so out of line with typical abduction.

This is SO crazy it's impossible to believe it's random. The creep wanted THAT girl, to the point where he tried to snatch her in plain sight of her mother, in public.

from prison. It's difficult to imagine a more dangerous type. Note the audacity... in a public venue, in broad daylight, and virtually out of her mother's hands.

And I am not in any way defending this guy. It is a good thing the officer there was trained and just restrained him. Because I am afraid that if I saw that young man trying to abduct a 13 year-old girl, my liberal believes would have stopped covering up my redneck and I would have grabbed the first heaving thing...well, you know. Been there many years ago.

It is apparent that at this point in time he is a threat to society and will most like spend most of his life in jail. But most truly evil types do not attempt to drag a girl out of a store in the middle of the day! That is a sick person.

But, this guy is apparent a veteran and has previous offenses. You have to know that his friends and family have know for years something is just wrong with him. And probably his teacher and employers. And once he was in the system the professionals he dealt with.

In most other 1st world countries a person like this would have had ample counseling, medical help, secured group home and more things to help him. And not only if his family could pay! But not here. Certainly not in Hernando County. It is just west of where I live and while beautiful is home to lots of snowbirds. Rich Yankees(could not resist) who vote against any tax hikes. They have there's after all.

So I am not defending him and what he did pretty much makes him unable to live with society. But, good lord, I wonder what could have become of a life like that if we have proper social services to help at the beginning of his decline. Because this guy could be any of our brothers or uncles or neighbors.

Me? I don't care about "saving" him. I want him put in a cage forever. If any of my brothers did that they can stay locked up.

The rich Yankees mostly go to FL because of your states favorable tax laws. It's probably where I'll go to protect my NYS pension. Please keep Fl pretty till I get there.

And unsalvegable at this point

But I always wounder how many people reach this point because they had no services for years. That's all.

Florida is awful pretty. But spend some time down here in the summer if you have not already. Our heat drives quite a few transplants up to the Carolinas after a few years.

Have a good day.

You aren't saying he's a good guy; you aren't even saying he can be redeemed. But you are rightfully questioning how he got to this point without any serious intervention by some entity other than the Law. He obviously shouldn't have been on the streets at all.

I cannot win! My first post one subject and I was seen as too forgiving. Now the opposite.

Please read my first post on the issue. I think too many people like this are failed by the system way before they reach this level.

Do not know the exact history of this case.

You and I probably do not disagree.

But you would not know that looking at how this country funds anything that might help the mentally ill or less fortunate

You know as well as I that in any other first world country this guy would have been helped from a young age and it is doubtful this event would have occurred. We will never know for sure.

And even now with proper help he might be helped and made able to live with society. But do you think that likely??

So because we as a society have no resources to help him, the alternative is too keep him locked up as a danger to society.

I learned about it the hard way in WWII. I had what was, in my mind then and now, a relatively minor wound. Something blew up and stuck a big piece of wood in my shoulder, but I was bleeding pretty good. My LT was hurt very badly with large chucks of stuff in his abdomen.

The doctors took me right away, patched me up, and sent me back into the fight. They did this for about 20 other guys, too.

They let my LT die.

I was pretty hot about it. They explained they had only so much medical care to go around, and could save 20 or maybe save 1, but probably not. So they saved 20. I didn't buy the explanation until I was much older.

Such is much the case with the criminal and mental health systems in this world. We could get a team of doctors and therapists and case workers working with this guy for 20 years and he might have come out OK.

Or we can help 1,000 kids in a bad place.

It's an ugly decision, but that's the way life is.
