Georgia man shot by police who went to wrong home dies: media
June 9, 2016

ATLANTA (Reuters) - A man died on Thursday after being shot by police who may have been sent to the wrong address in response to a report of gunfire, according to local media reports.

Relatives of William Powell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper that he died around 4 p.m. local time at the Atlanta Medical Center. Local broadcaster WSB-TV also reported the death.

. . .

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said Powell was armed with a handgun when an officer shot him in the neck after he did not comply with orders to drop his weapon outside his house in Stockbridge, south of Atlanta, on Tuesday night.

Powell's mother-in-law, Geraldine Huey, told the newspaper that Powell armed himself and went outside thinking he was checking out a possible intruder. Huey told the outlet she lives next door to Powell, a U.S. Air Force veteran.

If not, they can say whatever they want. We'll never 100% know the truth of what happened.
Heartbreaking.

He armed himself for protection from the protectors who armed themselves for protection from the armed.

Everyone with a gun is jumpy because they think everyone else has a gun. Including the cops.

but once he did that and he was assured of his safety for the moment why did he then go outside rather than call the police if he wasnt in any danger?

the inside was secure first and then I would call the police because unless you have security cameras covering your house outside at all angles if it was a robber they could have an accomplice you might not see hiding in wait.

it out, some of us aren't interested in calling the police at all, for one thing they kill too many innocent people responding to calls, for instance this military veteran.

who lived next door. The intruder (what he thought) had not entered his home, so maybe it was going to try to get into her home.

What would you do if your Mom lived next door and you thought there was a possibly dangerous person outside. You'd want to make sure your Mom was safe and with you, right?

According to police, Powell ignored orders to put down his handgun. One of the officers then fired at the homeowner, who had just emerged from his garage.

Powell, according to his mother-in-law, Geraldine Huey, had gone outside to investigate a possible intruder.

“He went to see what the dogs were carrying on about,” said Huey, 85, who lives next door. “He (picked) up his gun and when he got to the gate, they shot him.”

Many of them conflicting. He may not have been able to understand what they were yelling at him about.

I also bet he never really understood what was going on.

I used to watch some of the real life cop shows and if a group of men started screaming at me I wouldn't be able to figure out what they were on about. But I don't carry a gun around so hopefully they wouldn't shoot me.

Maybe they just saw the gun and fired! Shoot first, make up a good story, later!!!

Probably wouldn't be the first time that cops lied about how they dealt with a suspect!!!

As culpable as the police are, if the homeowner didn't have a gun, he wouldn't be dead - probably.
Knowing the police, they would have shot him for holding a kiwi because it might have been a hand grenade.

But if everyone has guns, I guess cops can just shoot people at will.

I'm really trying to understand, but I don't. Doesn't Georgia have some of the most lax gun laws?
