OAKLAND -- Sean Whent has resigned as Oakland's police chief, a City Hall source confirmed late Thursday.
Whent's departure comes amid a sexual misconduct invesitatigation involving police officers and a police dispatcher's daughter, but it was unclear why he stepped down.
Whent was Oakland's fourth police chief since 2009 and his replacement had not been officially announced as of 10:30 p.m. Thursday. His resignation was expected to be announced before the department's command unit at a 9 a.m. meeting Friday at Oakland police headquarters. A news conference has been scheduled for 11 a.m.
The Brentwood resident, who has spent his entire 20-year career with the department, was named by then-Mayor Jean Quan to replace Howard Jordan, though the monitor who oversees the department has input as to who stays and who goes.
