GOP Senator Draws Fire For Obama Prayer: 'May His Days Be Short'

Source: Huff Post

Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) joked at a conservative Christian event on Friday that he prays President Barack Obama’s “days will be short.”
The first-term senator began his opening statement at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority conference by telling attendees to pray for Obama. With a smirk, Perdue said, “We should pray for him like Psalms 109:8 says:

With a smirk, Perdue said, “We should pray for him like Psalms 109:8 says: ‘May his days be short and another take his office.’”

The large crowd laughed.
Perdue did not continue reciting the words, but Psalm 109 is a death wish for one of David’s enemies.

I doubt they invite atheist speakers to these conferrences. He's a very real Christian no matter how much people want to play NTS blame shifting, and the crowd's reaction shows his opinion is neither rare nor unwelcome among Christians committed enough to attend paid Christian conferences. This is not an isolated example of how Christians really feel about anyone not on the far right.

I don't know what spartan61 meant exactly, but if I'd made that comment, which I very well might have, or at least thought it, I'd have meant it in a different way than you're interpreting it.

I'd have meant that the behavior didn't conform to what Christianity boosters claim Christianity is. Even though I don't believe in any religion, if Christianity actually successfully preached a gospel that called for love, tolerance, forgiveness, peace, etc., if Christian's actions consistently reflected that philosophy, it would be a far better thing than it actually is.

My own idea is that Christian God represents Good and delivers all good things, with no areas of gray. If you want to pray for bad things, you're talking to Satan, who represents and delivers all bad things. As far as I'm concerned, David Perdue has bowed to Satan.

Jesus would shake his head and reprimand this phony Bible thumper.
The god of the old testament would smite him.
These so-called christians use violence as their answer to everything -- because that's exactly what Jesus would not do!
To my knowledge, the name christian is derived from Jesus Christ -- and they disgrace all of christianity.

So he doesn't have a problem with the OT smiting, mass-murdering angry god.

And he cussed out a fig tree that didn't fruit when it was not in season.

And he said "I come not in peace, but with a sword. I have come to [set families apart]".

Jesus said some very cruel and mean things, which Christians ignore completely or say "he was speaking in a metaphor."

not only represents Georgia, as a U.S. Senator, Perdue represents ALL OF US and he insulted us and embarrassed this entire country. Apparently Perdue hasn't learned from Donald Trump's debacle that American citizens do not approve of this type of behavior. Perdue needs to issue a NATIONAL APOLOGY. He has a FB page and the angry comments are flowing. So go there and DEMAND an apology.

A Republican calling for harm to President Obama -- nothing new. They say the most outrageous things, then they claim they weren't serious, or were joking, or were taken out of context -- and at the same time, they have encouraged the volatile lunatics that inhabit their party to take action and it would be validated.
Perdue must be taken aside and strongly made to understand what he's done, what its implications are, and what he must do now to apologize and retract his words -- but who will take that upon himself? Too many in his party agree with him.

I have seen a lot of "Pray for President Obama - Psalm 109.8" bumper stickers since 2008. By now we should be used to it. (Contrast that to someone who made a "burning Bush" joke during the last administration and got three years for it.)

The only proper way to thank these scumbags for all their hatred is to put Hillary Clinton, who they hate far worse than anything, in office along with a Democratic congress, and let her complete the job of fixing everything Shrub broke.

35. Vox - A Republican senator just prayed that Obama’s “days be few.” This is how the GOP got Trump
Sat Jun 11, 2016, 01:00 AM
Jun 2016

Republicans can't make comments like this on the one hand, then wonder how the ended up with Trump as their nominee on the other.

http://www.vox.com/2016/6/10/11902822/perdue-obama-psalm-days-few

You don’t have to believe Perdue literally wants Michelle Obama to be a widow to think that invoking this psalm toward the president of the United States is, perhaps, a bit inappropriate. (Perdue isn’t the first to suggest Psalm 109:8 is an appropriate prayer for Obama; it's become a meme in hard-right circles, where you can buy bumper stickers and shirts that say the same thing.)

The Republican Party acts shocked by Trump — like he is some alien parasite who has taken over their party without warning or precedent. They shouldn’t be so shocked.

Comments like Perdue’s are the context in which Trump ran. For years, Republican voters have been told that the president is a Muslim, a Kenyan, a socialist. They have heard Newt Gingrich fret over his "Kenyan anti-colonial mindset," Mitt Romney worry that the United States is "inches away from no longer being a free economy," and, yes, Donald Trump argue that he’s hiding the true circumstances of his birth. They were thrilled when Ben Carson called Obamacare "the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery" and pleased when Ted Cruz agreed to look into whether Obama was planning an armed takeover of Texas.

And those examples are limited to national leaders in the Republican Party. The rhetoric coming from state senators, talk radio hosts, and local Tea Party chairs is much worse. Grassroots Republicans have been told for years that the struggle with Obama is existential and civilizational, that the disagreements are fundamental and scary, that the future of the country they love dearly is in doubt.
