Elizabeth Warren meets with Hillary Clinton as vice-presidential rumors swirl
Source: The Guardian
Hillary Clinton hosted Senator Elizabeth Warren at her Washington home on Friday, fuelling speculation that the pair could join forces to form an all-female ticket in the presidential election.
The senator from Massachusetts arrived at Clintons house in an affluent, tree-lined suburb near Observatory Circle just before 10.40am and left about an hour later without taking questions from the media.
The women have had several conversations over the past month, the Washington Post reported.
Warren, 66, endorsed Clinton on Thursday night and, asked by MSNBCs Rachel Maddow if she felt confident she could be commander-in-chief if she became vice-president and had to assume the top job, replied: Yes, I do.

(108,977 posts)that would require a special election for an opening.
And Joseph Kennedy III, who is a member of Congress now, won his seat by 61%. He's being spoken of as a possible replacement in the Senate.

(16,245 posts)She will need plenty of help pushing her to the left. As VP, she will be effectively silenced into a useless position with no real authority. No, as VP, pick a nobody.

There are other good candidates for Veep.

(39,909 posts)...would like to see Warren as the VP.
That would effectively muzzle and neuter her.
The Democratic Party and the Nation NEEDS Warren's strong Liberal voice and ethics in the Senate.
She will be able to continue to voice the Liberal message, and Wealth Inequality Problem, the Too Big to Fail national disaster, and numerous other issues that Sanders ran on.
I just don't see her sitting quietly behind Clinton and nodding her head at Hillary's NeoLiberal Centrist No.We.Can't! administration.

(40,416 posts)The "I do." was a response to a specific question about Ed Rendell's comment that Liz was not qualified. Rachel asked her if she thought she was qualified. She said, "Yes, I do."
But that had absolutely nothing to do with whether she was interested in VEEP, which she clearly responded a couple minutes earlier when Rachel asked that question with, "I really love my work." (Or something like that.) She also mentioned her loyalty to her MA constituency.
So, no. Warren is not interested in VEEP.
Thank goodness.

(40,416 posts)In context, that changes things a bit. So "I love my work" means "no, not interested" here.

(5,954 posts)as Obama was when he was nominated. So, somebody should ask asshat Rendell if he thought Obama was not qualified when HE ran in 2008.
Seriously, that clown needs to take his name off the speed-dial list for Morning Joe.

(4,673 posts)all US presidents: how qualified they were, and how effective and well-regarded historically. There was no relationship between the two. Some of the most qualified were miserable presidents and vice versa. Basically, 'qualifications' were not predictive of how good a president he (and now she) would be.

(3,282 posts)I love Elizabeth Warren, and I hope she stays in the Senate. She is doing such a good job standing up to enormously moneyed interests, and I think she can do a lot more good where she is. If Hillary's looking for someone with great progressive credentials, I'm sure there are other options she can go to.

(5,082 posts)Unless the President delegates authority to them like Cheney got. This could take away Elizabeth's power and she could be used to hide behind and deflect blame of any centrists failures. Clinton campaign needs to own their identity now and prove they can deliver.

(17,469 posts)and HRC has to know that.
It would also give HRC "plausible deniability" with her Wall Street owners. She puts Warren in charge of Wall Street reform, and then pleads "Hey, what are ya gonna do? Had to keep the base happy."
Warren on the ticket (or Bernie) would unite the party. Anyone else, not so much.

(21,046 posts)Hillary makes speeches to Wall Street for exorbitant amounts of money. Hillary is in bed with Goldman Sachs.
Elizabeth Warren is determined to go after Wall Street and their outright theft of billions in the mortgage crisis of 2008 and yet not a single Wall Street banker has been indicted or gone to jail.
How can she reconcile this?

(13,776 posts)In fact, it's maybe only in this administration that it's been demonstrably true.
Did Bush actually like Cheney, or did he find in him an authority figure who would tell him what to do?
Towards the end of the Clinton administration, I don't think Gore was very impressed by Clinton.
I can't imagine Bush Sr. respected Quayle.
I don't think the Reagans and the Bushes got along, although I could be wrong about that.
Etc.
And LBJ and Kennedy loathed each other.
But given the recent model of the VP having a big part to play in the administration, I think Warren could play a very positive role, and be very powerful, even if her positions are not the same as Clinton's. I'd love to think of her having easy access to the President, and of her having the President's ear. She may feel it's worth giving up her seat as of one of 100 senators to have that access.
I would be so thrilled to vote for her... right now it's only people in Massachusetts who get to be so lucky!

(45,850 posts)for some reason the words mission acomplished come to mind-don't know why and there isn't any flight suit involved, but I have seen speculation that Clinton wanted to muzzle or otherwise negate a voice from the Democratic Party that might oppose some of her policies

(30,247 posts)Hillary is the first woman nominee of a major political party in our country's history. Voters may feel uncomfortable with two women on the ticket. There's also the fact that Liz is only two years younger than Hillary and is from the Northeast.
I think that she'll pick a man from a diverse state who is some years younger than herself. If elected, Hillary would not only be the first woman president, but also the second oldest. Notice how Obama, who was a young and not very experienced nominee, chose an older white man with years of political experience.
Liz Warren can probably do more good from the Senate and be one of Hillary's strongest allies in helping her pass her agenda. Ditto for Sanders.

She will just be expected to be the cheerleader for Hillary and maybe be the tie breaker in the Senate if that ever comes up.
Its a step down.
What would impress me would be Elizabeth Warren as Secretary of the Treasury. Now THAT would prove that Hillary will not, as she promised, be influenced by all the big money she has received from Wall Street.
I guess also Hillary may be looking at it as a way to physically protect herself. Any nefarious RW plotters may think twice if Warren is the one that's going to be her replacement.

(14,040 posts)to see how the electorate feel about a two-woman ticket.
If the people are amenable to Warren then all they have to do is find another progressive woman for the ticket.
In the meantime most progressives and Dems, and the general public, get excited about the concept of an all woman ticket
It's a smart play.

I'd rather have Warren in the Senate but I think we lose the presidency and fail to retake the Senate with a Hillary-GenericWhiteCentristDude ticket, and we win the presidency and the Senate with Hillary-Warren.
