Jesse Jackson endorsed Hillary Clinton on Saturday, saying he trusts her to work with groups including women and immigrants, CNN reported.
Jackson gave a speech at the site of a memorial in Chicago recognizing the hundreds of children who have been killed in the city. He cited Clinton's commitment to working with diverse communities.
"We trust her to work on health care, to fight for the poor ... for the willingness to fight for civil rights," Jackson said, according to CNN.

Jackson has a long history with both Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) which he said prevented him from endorsing in the primary race, according to The Hill. He previously endorsed President Obama in 2008 over Clinton.

Jesse Jackson for President 1988.
"Only a few prominent, white, progressive elected officials supported Jesse when it counted. The two I remember most risked their own political career to help JacksonJim Hightower, then the Texas agricultural commissioner, and Bernie Sanders, then the mayor of Burlington, Vermont. Jim and Bernie took the risk and, in Jesses eloquent phrase, stepped across the color line, much to their credit. That moral courage should not be left out of the history books.
During his passionate five-minute endorsement of Jesse, Bernie calls the Jackson campaign the most courageous and exciting political campaign in the modern history of our nation.
Here are a few lines from the closing of Sanderss nomination speech:
The candidate we are supporting tonight has stood for us and fought for us for the last 25 years of his life. Along with Martin Luther King Jr., he put his life on the line so that all Americans, regardless of color, could receive their basic democratic rights.
He was there when we needed him. Our candidate has stood with the farmers being thrown off the land. He has stood with the workers on the picket lines being thrown out of their jobs. He was there when we needed him
I place in nomination, with a great deal of personal pride, the name of Jesse Jackson. "

Bernie delivered Vermont for him. Too bad that Mr. Jackson has forgotten those that supported him when he needed it. I've lost a great deal of respect for Mr. Jackson, and if I could I would take back my votes for him.

(4,762 posts)You go back 30 years for a grudge against a giant of the American left?
Classless. I suspect Bernie himself would reject that calculated reasoning. Jesse is at the end of his life and in bad health.
1988. Unbelievable.

.... Steve Cobble was the national delegate coordinator for Jesse Jackson for President 1988 and later served as political director for the National Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. He also co-founded Progressive Democrats of America, the organization that started the draft Bernie effort more than two years ago and the first national organization to endorse Sanders for President.

(5,621 posts)Bernie went out on a huge limb for him in 1988. That endorsement could have ruined Bernie's political career before it even really started. But Bernie did the right thing, and asked for nothing in return. As they say, no good deed goes unpunished.

(5,621 posts)Big Deal. Plenty of people can say the same thing and do. From what is said it had a turnstile at the front door. If that is Jackson's motivation, then he certainly doesn't think much of those who helped him get there.
Bernie staked his entire political career on not only endorsing Jackson, but campaigning for him too. But I guess a stay at the White House is more important than doing what is right, even if it may hurt you and your family.

WASHINGTON The Rev. Jesse Jackson endorsed Hillary Clinton for president Saturday, calling her the most qualified and best hope to rebuild urban America and stop unemployment and violence in cities across the country.
Jackson, who endorsed President Obama over Clinton in 2008, said on Twitter that when it comes to "human and voting rights, racial and gender equality and affordable healthcare you can trust her."
The civil rights leader has a close working relationship with both Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and vowed to wait until one of the candidates clinched the Democratic party's nomination. Clinton declared victory Tuesday night when she reached the magic number of 2,383 delegates needed.........................
