Paris (AFP) - UEFA on Tuesday told Russia it would be kicked out of the European Championship if its fans cause one more incident of stadium trouble during the tournament.
Europe's governing body declared Russia responsible for the stadium disturbances, racist chanting and fireworks thrown during the Russia-England game in Marseille on Saturday.
It ordered the "suspended disqualification" of the team and fined the Russian Football Union 150,000 euros ($170,000).
"This disqualification is suspended until the end of the tournament," said the UEFA disciplinary commission decision.

(55,445 posts)England has (mostly) been on their best behavior relatively speaking, since the UEFA ban after Heysel... The mean, old-fashioned, skull-cracking hooliganism is mostly an Eastern European/Turkish thing now...

(2,025 posts)Football matches are now family occasions. When I went to see the Saints/West Ham match there was no trouble at all, a bit good natured chanting but that was it. And both sets of fans left together. There were no arrests of England fans during the last Euros in Poland/Ukraine. I'm not condoning what happened outside the stadium, but it was the odd idiot responding to jeers by some of the Marseilles locals, Marseilles is a Le Pen stronghold.
The England fans inside the stadium were well behaved. And the behaviour of the trouble makers outside the stadium has been condemned across the board. Not so with Russia.
"The lads defended the honour of their country," Russian media quoted MP Igor Lebedev, who is also on the executive committee of the Football Union.
The spokesman for Russia's powerful Investigative Committee went even further.
"A normal man, as he should be, surprises them," tweeted Vladimir Markin, referring to European outrage at Russian hooligans. "They're used to seeing 'men' at gay parades," he concluded.

(10,406 posts)Of 150 Russian thugs charging English fans at the game. It's blatantly obvious that the Russians were the agressors and the footage shows the English fans fleeing them, not fighting them. The film footage was scrutinized pretty carefully by French prosecutors and police. They also are saying some of the Russians came well prepared with equipment to use on the English.
The UK police banned a bunch of British hooligans before they even left the UK and have spotters in France to keep an eye out for known troublemakers. UEFA and the police are saying most of the problems from the Brits was alcohol fueled (not surprising)....and not organized like the Russians have been. The Russians are very organized and actually train for confrontations like this.

(24,324 posts)I know two highly visible, internationally famous classical musicians whose names are immediately recognizable to every classical musician anywhere- and to anyone who follows classical music at all. We are not personal friends, but they know who I am, anyway. They are superb artists, two of the best at what they do, and both are Russian.
They both are friends with Putin and support him.
There you have it.

(2,025 posts)Russia will be thrown out of Euro 2016 if their fans cause further trouble, says European governing body Uefa.
The Russians have also been fined 150,000 euro (£119,000) following violent scenes at the game against England in Marseille on Saturday.
The suspended disqualification and fine relate only to incidents that happened inside the stadium.
Meanwhile, groups of Russian fans are also being deported from France as a result of trouble at the tournament.

(2,025 posts)Just to put it into context, you won't be able to find photos of Cameron with leading English football hooligans.
My brackets.
The far-right leader of the Russian football supporters' association is due to be deported from France later, along with 19 fellow fans.
It follows violence at the England-Russia Euro 2016 match in Marseille.
Alexander Shprygin, (pictured above with Putin,) was among 43 Russian fans detained on Tuesday while on their way to Lille to watch Russia's second fixture, against Slovakia.
More than 12 Russians who were arrested following the trouble have been released without further action.
Three other detained Russian fans have been given jail sentences of up to two years over the violence in Marseille.

(101,271 posts)Flares were thrown on the pitch and fighting broke out in the Croatian end during the Group D contest with referee Mark Clattenburg being forced to suspend the game with four minutes remaining, while a steward was almost hit by a firecracker, as was Croatian goalscorer Ivan Perisic.
The Croatian Football Federation has been charged with setting off of fireworks (Article 16 (2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR)), throwing of objects (Art. 16 (2) DR), crowd disturbance (Art. 16 (2) DR) and racist behaviour (Art. 14 DR).
The racist behaviour charge comes after UEFA's anti-discrimination monitors - the FARE Network - revealed they had told tournament organisers about alleged fascist songs and banners allegedly waved by Croatia fans during the game.

I don't think the charges against Turkey are so serious - after the game, and not, as far as I know, endangering players or stewards.
