A sea of hands went up Saturday when Iowa Democratic Party delegates were asked how many were participating in their first state convention.

The question on many of their minds, however, was how many of these new participants would still be raising their hands for the party nominee after the dust settles at the national convention in July.

There was some indication that Hillary Clinton’s status as the presumptive nominee was having an effect. While there was some behind-the-scenes grumbling, the open conflict of some county and district conventions over delegate counts was mostly absent from the state convention.

Out of 1,285 delegates to the convention, Clinton was originally allotted 704. But after all the delegates were seated and given the opportunity to realign, Clinton had 714 and Bernie Sanders had 571. Clinton will have 23 national delegates from Iowa and Sanders has 21, not including superdelegates.

Were they "getting off the reservation"? They are happily on board now for the coming wars! A few crumbs from the golden plate and they will be satisfied!

by one delegate in Iowa. I think this convention just makes it official. but I could be wrong, as I do not follow all these state conventions.

....elected in the caucuses. The actual delegates are elected at the State Convention, which was just held.

The caveat is that the delegates that were elected on February 1 have to show up at the State Convention. It appears that a higher percentage of Clinton elected district delegates were there than Sanders elected district delegates. So, it appears that Clinton wound up with one more National Convention delegate than originally expected.

Essentially the Sanders delegates "disenfranchised" themselves.

*based on interpretations I've read over the months, not necessarily 100% correct.

Before IA State Dem Conv, it was HRC 707, BS 700. After, it's HRC 714, BS 571. (He lost 7 in realignment, but more in no-shows.)

As a former delegate from 2012, i can tell you for a fact that anyone
who gets elected / selected as a state delegate has absolutely NO
say about anything. Their soul purpose is to select a few individuals
from their state to go to the national convention.

Everything else (like the platform) is decided behind closed doors
by the party elite weeks earlier.

State political conventions amount to nothing more than an

AMWAY convention !
