Chairman resigns, many Sanders supporters apologize for 'disrespectful' role in Latino caucus election

By Robynn Tysver / World-Herald staff writer

A cadre of young Bernie Sanders backers in Nebraska learned this week that it wasn’t right to play politics with Latinos.

The Sanders group was accused of being “paternalistic” and exhibiting “white privilege” after it engineered the ouster of a longtime Latino leader in favor of a Sanders supporter as chairman of a Latino-centered group during last weekend’s Democratic State Convention.

Many of those in the Sanders group were young, white and male. And many of them apologized profusely during an emotional meeting Tuesday with Latino leaders in South Omaha. The meeting ended with the newly elected Sanders’ supporter stepping down and allowing the longtime leader of the Democrats’ Latino group to resume the helm.

“It was disrespectful. It really was. From the bottom of my heart, I want to apologize,” said Nate Gadrinski, 29, a Sanders supporter from Omaha. “It is clear you don’t want your allies making decisions for you.”....................

Washington, D.C. – Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders addressed Latino policymakers at an event that his rival for the nomination, Hillary Clinton, skipped, but he made no mention of the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party.

If so, where did they stand on the issues and organizing for a win?

Not much else ultimately matters.

Got elected by a group of white non-due paying people who just rampaged among the caucus rooms. They didn't know Adrian and it seems part of the ouster is due to him being an unknown and suddenly being brought to the top leadership position due to an illegal vote (only dues paying, long term members can select the lead position).

At the Latino caucus, the Sanders group flooded the meeting just as the vote for chairman was about to take place. Marta Nieves, who’s been active in the organization for more than five years, was running for re-election. However, the Sanders supporters preferred Adrian Sanchez, head of the Nebraska Latino Commission.

A group got too agressive in interparty politicing, came off looking bad, and fixed it. And comparing a group of primarily young white men organizing the ousting of a longtime Latino leader to sexism is pretty damn stupid. You didn't object to anything except the reporting of what some Bernie supporters actually did. And yes, sayingnyou're being "oversensitive" is about the nicest and most accurate response to your so called objection.

They were Sanders delegates from the caucuses, not Democraticunderground forum members. Nothing wrong with refering to them as Sanders supporters, since that is what they are. The new rules here acknowleging Clinton's victory and the partisan nature of the site does not mean a complete media blackout about news concerning the few primary related activities still going on. And there was little, if any, bashing going on. You are going out of your way to make trouble where there is none, and pretend to be a victim.
