Obama makes Stonewall Inn first national monument of LGBT movement
Source: NY Daily News
President Obama has declared the Stonewall Inn a national monument, making the iconic West Village bar the first national monument of the LGBT rights movement.
"Stonewall will be our first national monument to tell the story for the struggle for LGBT rights," Obama announced in a video released Friday.
The President honored the Stonewall patrons who fought back against a police raid on June 28, 1969, igniting the national gay rights movement 47 years ago.
"They stood up and spoke out. The riots became protests. The protests became a movement. The movement ultimately became an integral part of America," he said.

(745 posts)I'm all for this but am reluctant to glad-hand, here. I mean, 8 years almost = a monument at the 11th hour. Would have preferred a lot more leadership and common sense a long time ago. Now that it's politically 'available' and useful to the D's during an election, well, how convenient. IMHO, this is placating and appeasing people as to draw votes for an election and that is the motive, more so than anything else.
May be wrong, but that's what it feels like to me.

(53,410 posts)No minority has ever been handed their equal rights by the people in power. Everyone has had to fight for decades to be recognized officially as equal. Why not get into the mindset that now that you have all the rights of everyone else, you'll fight to retain them instead of complaining about the past.
Because as a woman I guarantee that the day will come when some white asshole men will do their best to take away your hard earned rights.

(745 posts)But I don't feel like I'm asking too much for the gov't to represent the people. Or perhaps I am. Not noble either way.
But I don't want to be a downer and this is a great move!
A lot of the heavy lifting wrt. LGBTQ rights was done when he repealed DADT in 2011, and then SCOTUS ruled gay marriage constitutional last year.
Rights for LGBTQ citizens has expanded pretty significantly over Obama's tenure (and thank goodness for Biden's comments back in 2012 that really started to get Obama on that "evolution" train). I think naming a monument in the location of the origin of the gay rights movement in the USA is a lovely punctuation to the work he's done so far.

(613 posts)He'll do this, but he still won't act to free an innocent man like Leonard Pelltier. I find this disturbing. He has a clear chance to right a clear injustice but won't even consider it.
Meanwhile he'll sanction a monument to a cause that, legislatively anyway, has basically been won.
Its like the kitchen sink is spouting a geyser, but the home owner is too busy patting himself on the back for fixing the bathroom sink leak to be bothered fixing the kitchen sink.

(56,108 posts)Your post is the epitome of heterosexism. First, you jingle keys with a "look over there" plea, which is disrespectful to the GLBT and dishonors the person you claim to be supporting. Second, you claim the LGBT cause has "basically been legislatively won" demonstrating you know little to nothing about LGBT rights (LGBT can be fired LEGALLY in several states, and in several other states, we can LEGALLY be evicted from or denied housing; not to mention states which don't record hate crimes against us; how's that for "winning legislatively"?!). And finally, you are dismissive of the actions of the president for doing a good thing for one minority and make it out as a bad thing since it had nothing do with the minority of your choosing.
You find this announcement disturbing, but I feel the same about your narrow-lensed remarks.

(613 posts)Not everyone who challenges the President to do better is against the President, nor is everyone who challenges people to put the same effort forward into alleviating non-gay social injustice a "heterosexist".
Pathetic reply. I won't call you narrow, but your response really speaks for itself.

(56,108 posts)I said nothing about those "challenging" the president is against him (Strawman). As for the second part of the first sentence, it simply proves the point of my first response, three weeks ago.
