A Texas man has contracted a flesh-eating bacteria after swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, according to Austin, Texas, TV station KXAN. The station reports Adrian Ruiz is the second man in two weeks to become infected with the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus after swimming in the Gulf near Galveston.
Ruiz's family was swimming in Port Aransas when he became infected, which he first noticed after suffering from a headache and a rash on his leg.
The bacteria is spread through contact with uncooked shellfish or by swimming in contaminated bodies of water with an open cut, according to KXAN.
