Racist incidents feared to be linked to Brexit result

Source: The Guardian

People have been reporting incidents of racism believed to be fuelled by the result of the EU referendum, including alleged racist graffiti and cards reading “no more Polish vermin” posted through letterboxes.Suspected racist graffiti was found on the front entrance of the Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) in Hammersmith, west London, early on Sunday morning. The Metropolitan police confirmed they had been called to the cultural centre on Sunday morning and were pursuing inquiries related to “allegedly racially motivated criminal damage”. Neither POSK nor the police would confirm the content of the message, which has since been washed off.

Greg Hands, Conservative MP for Chelsea & Fulham, condemned the act on Twitter as “an unspeakable crime” and “indescribably awful”, adding:

The incident comes as Cambridgeshire police are investigating reports of racist laminated cards being distributed in Huntingdon on Friday in the hours after the leave result was announced.

According to reports from the Cambridge News, a number of cards saying “Leave the EU/No more Polish vermin” in both English and Polish were found outside St Peter’s school by teaching assistants and students, including an 11-year-old Polish child, who reported they made him feel “really sad”.

just righteous anger directed at the global elites and Obama. It's true because Glenn Greenwald says so.

They're having a love-in with the UK Conservatives right now on some of those threads.

Going in there feels like you've fallen down a rabbit hole.

12. IIRC the popularity of Fascism jumps after the Left fails to deal with a problem.

In this case the "problem" being the fallout of our modern global economy and rising development in what was formerly called the "3rd World" as well as the fallout of automation in industry.

A lot of "left-wing" populists easily turn into right-wing populists when the mainstream left fails to deal with the problem. I've seen a lot of my fellow Americans who I had thought were liberal or liberal-ish becoming vocal supporters of the Talking Yam and start ranting about "liberal elites".

2. Why, how could it be racist?

They're white. They just need to suck up their privilege. They just lost a little bit of power, there's no need for them to be upset. It's not like they NEED that home there anyway, they need to vote for their best interests. They're just angry and white, so they're complaining, the bigots. As if whites can be oppressed.

repeated and repeated and repeated, "take our country back".

This is the underlying sentiment they were exploiting.

Johnson and Gove couldn't even be bothered to offer reassurance to legitimate immigrants already here, who now live in fear and uncertainty. That was left to London mayor Sadiq Khan and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon - literally the first thing both of them said in their speeches after the results.

Utterly shameful.
