Police respond to "active crime scene" after shots fired in downtown Denver

Denver Police are responding to what they're calling an "active crime scene" in the 1500 block of Wynkoop.

DPD said on Twitter that shots were fired near 15th and Wynkoop and that victims have been transported to an area hospital.

Roads in the area of 15th and Wynkoop will be closed for an extended period of time. Police ask drivers to avoid the area.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Multiple victims amid active shooting in Denver, police say

DENVER — Denver police are reporting an active shooter situation with multiple victims Tuesday afternoon.

Paramedics took victims from scene of the shooting, at 15th and Wynkoop, just blocks from the University of Colorado Denver, to area hospitals, police confirmed.

Surrounding streets have been closed and people are being asked to avoid the area.

The first 911 call reported a male with a gun; details about the alleged shooter are not yet known.

Police closed streets near 15th and Wynkoop and urged merchants and residents in the area to shelter in place. Police said officers have cleared the shooting scene at the Alliance Center in the 1500 block of Wynkoop in what remains an active investigation. The building houses a number of left-leaning political and environmental groups.

Diana Best works for Greenpeace and said she went to the Alliance Center to meet someone from the Sierra Club.

“I heard screaming, I saw the door to the second floor open and there was just loud screaming,” she said. “I think there was a lot of confusion. People were screaming, ‘There’s a man with a gun inside.’”

Best saw two ambulances bring stretchers into the building.

“With the recent events, this is absolutely terrifying,” Best said. “It seems like it’s out of control. I’m still shaking. As a human being we have to figure out what to do with gun violence.”

Police spokesman Doug Schepman said the gunman shot the victim several times and then shot himself. Schepman said the victim was targeted by the gunman and that the shooting was not random.
