French President Hollande endorses Clinton

Source: Politico

French President François Hollande endorsed Hillary Clinton in a newspaper article published Thursday, likening Republican Donald Trump’s nativist bombast to anti-immigrant movements across Europe.

Hollande said “the best thing the Democrats can do is to get Hillary Clinton elected” in the article, published Thursday in France’s Les Echos newspaper. The socialist president also said electing Trump “would complicate relations between Europe and the U.S." and agreed with the notion that it would be dangerous.

Trump’s isolationist rhetoric likely sounds familiar to Hollande, who faces strong opposition from Marine Le Pen, the outspoken leader of France’s National Front party. Le Pen, a vocal immigration opponent, has called for France to follow in the footsteps of the United Kingdom and leave the European Union.

Holland compared Trump’s pledges on immigration, including promises to build a southern border wall and temporarily ban Muslims from entering the United States, to rhetoric from Le Pen and other European nationalist leaders.

Then again this creates a perfect opening for Repigs to bring back the whole "too French" line of attack.

I think it is inappropriate for a head of state to endorse any U.S. presidential candidate, but M Hollande is really not endorsing anyone, just expressing an opinion about the candidate he thinks would be easiest to work with.

But he is also a Head of Government, and therefore must take care to keep the public and private separate. It is the old dilemma of the King's Two Bodies.

It is true that the United States returned the favor in the 20th century World Wars, but without the assist of the French fleet against the British in the Revolutionary War, we would be a far different country today than we are...

There is not a single world leader outside of Putin that should be on record supporting THE HUMAN YAM. Trump is a stain on the Republican Party that won't ever wash off...reminds me of the ring in the tub from the "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back!"

Scrub as hard as they can the GOP will never recover from this idiot and his heinous followers. I could not be happier watching them squirm trying to weasel out of owning the disaster they created in their own midst.

the only smart comment to make on another democratic country's election, referendum etc. is "we will deal with whoever is elected and we hope to continue to have good relations with country X"

Even if it is a xenophobic nationalist candidate, interference from outside plays right into their hands.

I don't think the endorsement is necessarily helpful to Clinton. On the other hand, had the French president state that a Trump election would be harmful in specified ways, then that might have been more helpful.
