CLEVELAND Millions of dollars short and running out of time, organizers of the Republican National Convention have written an urgent request for $6 million to Las Vegas billionaire couple Sheldon and Miriam Adelson to cover the bills for next weeks festivities.
In a letter addressed to the Adelsons, obtained by POLITICO, the Cleveland 2016 Host Committee revealed the names of more than two dozen prominent corporations and individuals who have reneged on a collective $8.1 million in pledged donations.
The letter represents the most public acknowledgement to date that Donald Trump has directly cost convention organizers millions of fundraising dollars.
Over the past couple months, negative publicity around our potential nominee resulted in a considerable number of pledges backing out from their commitments, the letter says.
It goes on to list the companies and wealthy individuals who have withdrawn their financial commitments. Among those who have canceled their donations, according to the letter, are David Koch ($1 million), FedEx ($500,000), Visa ($100,000) and both Pepsi ($500,000) and Coca-Cola ($1 million).

(68,341 posts)June? Wanna bet he is counting the nearly $50 million he lent the campaign, because he converted the loan into a gift in June. I bet the campaign itself, like the RNC convention committee, is running close to the end of its funds.

(6,017 posts)There's something really odd about the round-robin he is playing with money between his campaign and corporations...

(68,341 posts)in June might just be that money he put into the campaign? IOW, he claims that donors are stepping up to the plate, but are they really?

(89,294 posts)to introduce his new running mate (which he canceled because of the terrorist strike in Nice, France), HE WOULD HAVE PAID HIMSELF FOR IT. He would have "rented out" his lobby for the event, and charged his campaign a pretty penny. Hundreds of thousands of pretty pennies, actually. The price tag for these things, as we've seen, run into the middle-to-high five figures - at least. "Creative accounting" is certainly his friend. No wonder we haven't seen a single tax return yet.

The amount of money that they're asking for is a drop in the bucket for him.
Keep in mind that he's in the casino business, so unlike a lot of the elites who are only hideously wealthy on paper, he has access to vast amounts of liquid capital.

(89,294 posts)But I also know people like him hate to spend money. Every extra check is something he can easily write but he'll grimace and kvetch and drag his heels as long as he can. After all, that big a pile of money draws VERY serious interest. That's why the Koch brothers haven't just jumped in and splurged. They had to spend money. And hell, they each are way richer than Shel Adelson. They can afford to WASTE money. Seriously, from where you and I stand, what's a few million dollars' loss when you have 30 Billion? Adelson dumped a series of ten-million-dollar checks on newt gingrich last time around. Well, these guys care a lot about that. Their money can make them a king's ransom in interest if they just keep most of it invested. Imagine even a 5% return on even half of that?
So every time one of these guys has to get the checkbook out again, groaning all the way, I just get a little grin on my face.
Hell, it's really the only sweet revenge I can get!

When was the last time a convention accomplished anything that wasn't already decided by that other sideshow, the primaries? It would seem to me, the cities of Cleveland and Philadelphia have better things to do with their limited resources. As for a boost for the local economies, is it really worth it?
End of rant!
