Teen lesbian couple found shot in Texas park

Source: MSNBC

Two teenage girls in a relationship were found with gunshot wounds to the head in a south Texas park, with one of them dying from her injuries, media reports say. Police were searching for their assailants.

Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were found in knee-deep grass in a nature area in Portland by a couple Saturday, said Portland Police Chief Randy Wright, who confirmed to msnbc.com details first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller Times.

I have driven back and forth to Mexico from Portland, Oregon...and I drive through Texas just as quickly as I can. I have to preface this by saying I know some really great folks from Texas. But it is also one of the largest and scariest places to drive through with my Hispanic wife, and I absolutely HATE the state and the backwardness and bigotry that it is home to. I have little good to say about my time there. I enjoy Dallas, and Austin, and DFW has one of the best airports in the country...but that's all the positives I can think of. Drive through Pecos, Texas some time, and you'll understand my point. What a terrible place to visit...or be forced to drive through.

When you're trying to blame the entire state of Texas for a tragic incident such as this, good manners call for you to make exceptions for (1.) a very few decent people who live in Texas, undoubtedly against their will; and (2.) the city of Austin, which, as everybody knows, is the only Really Cool Place in the state. Thank you for your consideration.

of the hate crime stats:

Stay out of New England. Bunch of violent bigoted hicks up there.

And while their being lesbians *may* have been a factor I think we should wait until they actually find the people who do this rather than creating an entire narrative based merely on state stereotypes.

"When asked if police had been able to determine if the girls' sexuality played any role in the shootings, Wright told msnbc.com: “That’s always something that we’re looking for, but as of this point, we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack.”"

UCR statistics are reliable estimates of reported crime and somewhat reliable at the state and local level for trending data within a specific jurisdiction but comparatives from jurisdiction to jurisdiction based on a single crime statistic are problematic.

The strength (personnel and other resources) and the aggressiveness of a jurisdiction’s law enforcement agency are also key factors in understanding the nature and extent of crime occurring in that area. For example, one city may report more crime than a comparable one, not because there is more crime, but rather because its law enforcement agency, through proactive efforts, identifies more offenses. Attitudes of the citizens toward crime and their crime reporting practices, especially concerning minor offenses, also have an impact on the volume of crimes known to police. (snip)

Hate Crime Statistics provides a nationwide view of hate crime based on statistics contributed by local, county, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies. Although many of the listed factors equally affect the crime of a particular area, the UCR Program makes no attempt to relate them to the data presented. The data user is, therefore, cautioned against comparing statistical data of individual reporting units from cities, counties, metropolitan areas, states, or colleges or universities solely on the basis of their population coverage or student enrollment.

I don't have a particularly positive image of Texas. What amuses me is the inherent contradiction in his arguments. He's always ranting about big brother, loss of privacy, how unconstitutional just about everything is, yet the idea of discriminating against gays and lesbians is perfectly normal. But it's a big state and obviously there are many awesome people in the state (including some friends that have moved there), and Austin for example is actually a pretty cool city. Too bad, much of the state is still stuck in a time warp...

and I've always kept my politics away from work. I have noise isolating earphones and block him out. I know that sounds kinda cowardly, but I'm in the South and well, ultimately I want to keep my job and my eye on my own bottom line. He won't change his opinions either way...I'm thinking I may want a change of scenery eventually anyways...

Either way, crimes like the one mentioned above just personally sicken me...I don't understand the hatred in the first place, and the hatred that drives one to violence? Just plain shocking and appalling...

I also suspect that it was, because there isn't any obvious alternative that makes any kind of sense at all, even though the police are quoted as explicitly saying "...we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack.”

There are some sick people out there. That I know for sure.

35. Teen Making Amazing Recovery After Tragic Shooting of Her and Her Girlfriend

PORTLAND, Texas(NBCLatino) - Mary Kristine Chapa, 18, who was shot in the head on Saturday along with her girlfriend Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, who was killed, is making an "amazing" recovery, her brother told NBCLatino.com.

"Krissy's health - considering what happened to her - she's doing amazing," says Hilario Chapa, 32. "She's making a strong recovery. The doctors are amazed."

A couple visiting Andrews Park in Portland, Texas on Saturday saw the bodies of two teens in a grassy area. In a statement, Portland police chief Randy Wright said that while family and friends have confirmed the two teens were in a same-sex relationship, there is no evidence as of yet to indicate the attacks were a hate crime. The Texas Rangers have joined the investigation.

Hilario, a tech sergeant in the Air Force reserve, who served with the 82nd airborne division, says his sister took sign language in high school and has been able to communicate in that way. He says she has made physical progress on her right side but they are still waiting for a response from the left side of her body ...
