Clinton camp: Trump's Russia remarks 'a bridge too far'

Source: The Hill

Hillary Clinton's campaign on Wednesday slammed Donald Trump for saying he hoped the Kremlin had Clinton's deleted emails, calling it “a bridge too far.”

Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon told MSNBC that Trump "is now openly inviting Russia to engage in cyberattacks against the United States." Fallon said he agreed with Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), whose office issued a statement calling Russia "a global menace led by a devious thug" and saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin "should stay out of this election."

"We need to stand up Russia," Fallon said. "This has to be the first time that a major presidential candidate has actively encouraged a foreign power to conduct espionage against his political opponent," Clinton senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan added in a statement.

"That's not hyperbole, those are just the facts. This has gone from being a matter of curiosity, and a matter of politics, to being a national security issue," Sullivan said.

Didn't someone demand Hillary Clinton be removed from US security updates because of the email kerfuffle? A candidate calling to his Russian comrades to cyberattack his election opponent is certainly a more serious national security risk.

Why do the Democrats not have an answer to the inevitable response they will get from the GOP: "Sour grapes. Move along, partisan sniping."

I would, for once, like to see them stick a microscope up Trump's ass for years the way the GOP has manipulated the government bureaucracy to hound Hillary Clinton. From this to that to emails to leaks to .... It's always something dogged. And it is often effective. Why don't Democrats and progressives have similar tools to make something take on a life of its own like this national security issue with Trump?

Because 6 media companies control 90% of what gets out as news in this country. How many of them would be considered to have a liberal bent?

Most likely zero. Liberals best bet is the internet probably.

That plenty of conservative military folks and others who consider themselves patriots also happen to be rabidly anti-Hillary:

Military Times survey: Troops prefer Trump to Clinton by a huge margin
In a new survey of American military personnel, Donald Trump emerged as active-duty service members' preference to become the next U.S. president, topping Hillary Clinton by more than a 2-to-1 margin. However, in the latest Military Times election survey, more than one in five troops said they’d rather not vote in November if they have to choose between just those two candidates.

But given only those choices, 21 percent of the service members surveyed said they would abstain from voting.More than 54 percent of the 951 troops Military Times surveyed said they would vote for Trump, the presumed Republican presidential nominee, over Clinton, the Democratic front-runner. Only about 25 percent said they would vote for Clinton in that matchup.
http://www.militarytimes.com/story/military/election/2016/05/09/military-times-survey-donald-trump-beats-hillary-clinton/84132402/

That's from May, so of course opinions might have shifted.

Things also seem bad among retired military:

More than 80 percent of active and retired military have unfavorable view of Hillary Clinton
Just a 15 percent of active and retired military personnel have a favorable view of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to a RallyPoint/Rasmussen Reports national survey released Monday.
Mrs. Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential front-runner, is seen unfavorably by 81 percent, including 69 percent who have a “very unfavorable” impression of her.
Three percent said they have a “very favorable” impression of her.
Twenty-seven percent of military women had a favorable impression of Mrs. Clinton, compared to 12 percent of men.
The survey of 1,473 military adults was taken from Oct. 25-Nov. 2 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/nov/16/more-than-80-percent-of-active-and-retired-militar/

That's from 2015.

I remain doubtful that Trump's antics, Russian connections, and now Russian hacking trolling will significantly change these peoples' minds. If anything, polls have proven that the more ridiculous Trump is, the better he does. Sad but true.

when he said he could shoot someone and still get the nomination.

For the people backing him, is there nothing he can't say that won't turn them off completely? His comments about women, all by themselves should have been enough to get him out of this election (not to mention shamed out of the country), but he's done it with women, the disabled, people of color, the press (who still fawn over him), and foreign allies. I know the man is utterly without shame, but is that true of his followers because it appears so? Are there really that many people who will vote for him no matter how much stupid, treasonous, BS vitriol he spews? It's terrifying.

he gets stronger.

In this case, Trump has reminded people about Hillary's emails - and most view how she handled them as negative.

Trump says, "release her emails Putin", which many people assume Putin has because of the security issues on Hillary's server.

What the Hillary campaign is arguing now is that Hillary is the hapless victim of evil Putin and traitorous Trump - which people may be sympathetic to, but doesn't really paint a picture of Hillary as a strong leader ready to take on wicked, unscrupulous foreigners.

We will see. After what has happened this year already, no one knows what is really possible.

The "Bridge too Far" was Operation Market Garden in 1944, an enormous combined-arms operation in which three and a half divisions of paratroopers and glider troops were dropped over the entire length of the Netherlands in an attempt to control the highway and all of the bridges which led to the German border.

Almost nothing worked as hoped, and the Germans were left in control of the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem, and also the Scheldt estuary, which prevented Antwerp from being used as a supply point. It also used the remaining supply of gasoline on which the Allied armies depended, extending the war in Europe into 1945.

It also indirectly guaranteed that the Russians would capture Berlin.
