Reid: GOP leaders 'spineless' for continuing to support Trump
Source: MSN/The Hill
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid slammed GOP leaders on Sunday, calling House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell "spineless" for refusing to revoke their endorsements of Donald Trump.
Reid's statement is the latest in the growing chorus of criticism leveled at the GOP presidential nominee for his comments about the parents of a Muslim-American solider killed in Iraq.
But instead of focusing his ire solely on the nominee or the heroism of Humayun Khan, who was killed 12 years ago in Iraq, Reid pushed blamed onto the Republican leaders, who both released statements Sunday praising the Khan family without mentioning Trump.
"Senator McConnell and Speaker Ryan approvingly spoke at Donald Trump's convention, endorsed Donald Trump for president and believe he is mentally fit to sit in the Oval Office. Occasional statements that do nothing to repudiate Donald Trump's words and actions are spineless. Anything short of revoking their endorsements is cowardice," Reid said.

I think Reid is entirely correct. This is worse then their continuous support of Todd Akin who sort of apologized for his legitimate rape comments. Trump is entirely unrepentant and continues to double down on his most racist, discriminatory remarks. Also, while you could sort of say that Akin was not representative of the entire GOP, how do you get around Trump who is the party's nominee?
The continued endorsement of Trump is an admission that he represents what the GOP is all about. You can't repeatedly claim that you do not endorse Trump's views on race, religion, sexism, and Russia, but continue to endorse him.

but there's been a political wisdom because at the times that
really matter, his judgement has been spot on!
Give 'Em Hell, Harry!
The 'spineless' comment indicates he thinks there is blood in the water,

(60,536 posts)Today, both McTurtle and Paulie "Blue Eyes" issued statements kind of blasting Trump; did they issue them before or after Reid's statement. I'll have to see if I can find out that information

(40,416 posts)It was the best speech of the convention. He made it without script, from his heart. It is one of the most profound expressions that one could ever experience.
When he whips out his pocket constitution, it is the most profound line of the entire convention. "I will gladly lend you mine."
The best of the best.

(30,813 posts)They are trying to have it both ways, but they underestimate what a colossal disaster Trump's downfall will be.
Years from now, Republicans will be gauged by how whether they endorsed Trump, and whether they spoke out against his atrocious statements.

(17,387 posts)I think Reid has brought up the Supreme Court nomination several times.

he Senate brawl over whether to confirm a new justice to the Supreme Court is getting uglier and it's also producing some strange bedfellows in Washington.
The latest exchange happened Wednesday when Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid blasted Chuck Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, for his surprise attack a day before on John Roberts, the conservative chief justice of the Supreme Court, who Grassley blamed for contributing to the politicization of the Supreme Court confirmation process.
"I'm here to defend Chief Justice John Roberts" who has been "attacked without cause," said Reid. In 2005, the Nevada Democrat voted against Roberts' confirmation.
"Senator Grassley has the audacity to accuse Roberts of being part of the problem, even going so far as to tell the chief justice: 'Physician, heal thyself,'" Reid said. "What needs mending is the Judiciary Committee under his chairmanship, which he has annexed as a political arm of the Republican leader's office. Senator Grassley has sacrificed the historical independence of the Judiciary Committee in order to do the bidding of the tea party and the Koch brothers," he said, referring to politically active billionaires David and Charles Koch.
