Sanders surrogate weighing Green Party run for vice president

Source: The Washington Post

By David Weigel and John Wagner July 31 at 11:30 PM

Nina Turner, a former Ohio state senator who became one of Sen. Bernie Sanders's most passionate surrogates, confirmed Sunday night that she has been offered a spot on the Green Party's 2016 ticket. She has not decided whether to accept it.

"It's true," Turner said when asked whether presumptive Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein had asked her to become her running mate. "Talking with my family. There's nothing to tell at this point."

Turner, who served on the Cleveland City Council and in the state Senate, was an early backer of Hillary Clinton who switched to support Sanders and campaigned for him aggressively. While Sanders struggled to crack Clinton's support with black voters, Turner served as a surrogate who could credibly criticize Clinton's record on criminal-justice reform.

"Nina's got political cachet," said RoseAnn DeMoro, executive director of National Nurses United, a Sanders-supporting union that has not endorsed Clinton and that organized a small rally in support of Turner after she lost a speaking slot during the Democratic National Convention last week. "She killed herself for the last year in the Sanders campaign. She was the second to Bernie, I would imagine, in terms of speaking for the campaign on national television. She's African American, she's smart, she's a draw."

The Greens have been stuck in a political cul-de-sac for many election cycles. Seeking support where they can, but finding that the policies they pick to bring attention, like anti-vax, often only serve to deepen their marginalization.

Taking someone whose been in the mainstream of political reporting gives them some celebrity to draw on. But it will end Turner's run in the political mainstream.

MOreover, it's a stink bomb for Sanders, which through a guilt by association process will extend the alienation between Clinton supporters and Sanders efforts.

She's generally ignorant about world affairs and is not ready to step in if something happens to the president.

Best to return to your roots where you can do some material good for the long term.
Don't blow what you have built up.
