U.S. Manufacturing Slows, Construction Spending Weakens As Orders Drop Across The Board

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON — U.S. manufacturing activity slowed in July as orders fell broadly, while a drop in construction spending in June suggested a downward revision to the second-quarter economic growth estimate published last week.

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said its index of national factory activity slipped 0.6 percentage point to a reading of 52.6 last month. A reading above 50 indicates an expansion in manufacturing, which accounts for about 12 per cent of the U.S. economy.

Manufacturing remains constrained by the lagging effects of the dollar’s rally and an oil price plunge between June 2014 and December 2015, which have hurt exports and undercut business spending.

Although the ISM index has remained above expansion territory for five consecutive months, so-called hard data on manufacturing has been generally weak amid soft business spending. Last month, manufacturers reported declines in new orders, export orders and order backlogs.

I have often suspected that corporations try to make the economy look as bad as possible if a Democrat incumbent or successor is running for President.

Sounds crazy, I know. But I can't shake the feeling they delay expenditures and play other games in Presidential election years.

50 million people lose the jobs they had or watch it replaced by some shit job that will never pay their bills, and enriching bank$ter/donors for 8 years, according to the plan in Timothy "Killer" Geither's book Stress Test didn't help much either.

And that's not a feeling. Every bit is documented in numerous books, reports, tragedies.

We will see how it shakes out, but I bet people care more about their empty pockets, and the fact that their kids are facing a much worse life than they had, than they do about most anything else.

Senator Sanders carried these economic issues as far as he could, the baton has been passed to the Clinton-Kaine ticket.

We Democrats need to make sure these economic issues are not hijacked by Trump's rightwing populism.

Apparently Obama "let" ... all those bad things happen ... many of which happened before he took office.

Why do you not include LINKS to the "Every bit is documented in numerous books, reports, tragedies." Comment.

My guess ... is that you want to ignore some data ... like the DOW, or Unemployment numbers which contradict you.

Much easier to make a wild BS claim, and not support it.

Sine you speak of lies - you could watch this segment where voters and others laugh at Geithners face when he tries to spin it otherwise...

It's really entertaining

Or here, where the facts are laid out and the lies are disabused by Ritholtz. I think he still has a $50,000 reward, if you care to back your claim of BS up.

Like I said, there are thousands, end nearly everyone except Sarah Palin knows it.

The labor department stats support exactly what I said about unemployment, and the outlook is shit for the kids - 6 Of The Fastest-Growing Jobs In America Pay Low Wages

You can feel free to deny it all you want, but he voters I talk to disagree with you.

Maybe you could meet us where they opened the school for the first time for free lunches, because many parents here can't make enough to feed their kids, people who bought these homes or moved in here 10-15 years ago.

There is a LOT MORE, but even better, I will reach for people and put them up against your stats any day you want, sweetheart.

You sure throw the name of the real estate swindler around a lot. I bet he appreciates your helping his brand.

on anything but food and shelter and often trade downward on shelter so they can get enough to eat.

This isn't an election ploy, it's the result of decades of cheap labor conservatism from both parties. The Democrats seem to be dimly starting to recognize this. The Republicans are still totally oblivious.

ISIS for instance. They are currently being routed by Libyan government with the help of US air attacks.

No one with that kind of power has invested in risky propositions like seed money for entrepreneurship or even expansion of existing companies for a long time, it's too easy to keep the numbers going up by shaving points off stock trades via hedge funds or simply keeping the money in the stock market, inflating it.

That's been one of the real problems all along, no incentive to invest in US businesses, while offshore governments offer sweetheart deals on land and raw materials while our own government has offered tax incentives for shipping industry offshore.

The major problem is that the US worker is just plain tapped out. The rich have gotten unimaginably richer, but that money is not going anywhere until it is forced to.
