Sanders raises cash for Wasserman Schultz challenger

Source: The Hill

By Ben Kamisar

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is fundraising to help defeat Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), the embattled former Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairwoman.

Sanders, a former presidential contender, on Tuesday emailed his supporters to ask them to donate to Tim Canova, the law professor who is working to unseat Wasserman Schultz in an Aug. 30 primary.

In the email, Sanders hammered Wasserman Schultz over leaked DNC emails that showed officials plotting to undermine his campaign against Hillary Clinton, who is now the party's nominee. The fallout from the email leak led to the resignation of Wasserman Schultz and other top figures.

"The recent emails leaked from Democratic Party staff showed that under Debbie Wasserman Schultz, DNC staff were not exactly fair and even-minded during the presidential primary," Sanders wrote.

We have to wait until Oct. 15th for the final numbers.

DWS gets BIG out of state donors.

Two Florida Dems walking away with the Bernie small donor award: http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2016/08/two-florida-dems-walking-away-with-the-bernie-small-donor-award/

by Alec Goodwin on August 4, 2016

Two Florida Democrats who have been in the spotlight lately for very different reasons are the winners of the Bernie Sanders $200-and-under award, receiving the largest share of their congressional campaign funds from people giving modest amounts of any current candidates so far this cycle.

Individuals who gave $200 or less flocked to Sanders’ campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, carrying him much farther than most experts predicted. He drew in 59 percent of his purse from such donors, a staggering amount for a serious White House contender and far more than Hillary Clinton’s 19 percent, though she bested Sanders for the party nod.

Among congressional candidates, few can approach Sanders. But the House and Senate leaders by this measure were both Sanders supporters. Tim Canova leads House contenders and Congress overall with 76 percent of his contributions from small donors — about 11 times the House average of 6.9 percent this cycle.

Canova is running for the seat held by former Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schulz.
Rep. Alan Grayson leads among Senate candidates with 55 percent of his campaign funds originating with small donors. The average for Senate campaigns: 11.8 percent. Grayson is up against fellow Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy for the chance to fight failed GOP presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio for his seat.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) $523,539 (72%) $207,928 (28%)
Tim Canova (D) $14,795 (11%) $114,627 (89%)

Sure, DWS takes more out-of-state money than Canova, but she also takes far more in-state money than he does. Nearly 90% of his money is out-of-state, while 72% of hers is in-state.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) $64,050 (12%) $479,535 (88%)
Tim Canova (D) $500 (1%) $82,551 (99%)

While they both get a lot out of money from outside the district, DWS gets far more money from inside the district than he does. Outside donors can flood Canova's coffers if they want, but if he can't get support from the people who actually live in the district, he's toast.

As for the metro areas donating the most to each candidate:

Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D)

MIAMI $225,220
FORT LAUDERDALE $119,575
WEST PALM BEACH-BOCA RATON $88,850
NEW YORK $42,140
WASHINGTON, DC-MD-VA-WV $33,259

Tim Canova (D)

NEW YORK $17,095
LOS ANGELES-LONG BEACH $7,752
BOSTON, MA-NH $7,534
CHICAGO $7,337
WASHINGTON, DC-MD-VA-WV $7,273

DWS's top three metro areas are in Florida. Not one of Canova's is in Florida.

I think hers is mostly the same but it has been changed. So it will be interesting for people who didn't live in district in 2014 but now do. I was looking at it and her district no longer goes as south Miami Beach, it includes more of south Broward County and less of Miami-Dade County. This probably won't have a large effect on the race but it is interesting to note.

Cannova has no loyalty to a Dem President. DWS will support a Pres Clinton in the Supreme Ct picks as well as House funding for her Dem & Progressive policies.
DWS can be counted on for that vote. Cannova can not.

That is what this election is about.

Cannova is just another new unknown multimillionare with zero vetting as to loyalty to a Dem President.
