RNC looks to expand outreach to African-Americans

Source: CNN

The Republican National Committee is upping its outreach to black voters as Donald Trump's candidacy faces a steep battle to win over minorities.
Concerns that Trump has failed to address issues of importance to black voters have led to low support for the Republican nominee. An August NBC/Wall Street Journal poll puts Trump's support with registered black voters at 1%.
Trump's low numbers come as he trails Hillary Clinton in key battleground states and has had trouble overall expanding his reach beyond core GOP voters. Clinton is also campaigning in part to extend the legacy of President Barack Obama, who experienced record numbers of black support in 2008 and 2012.
The RNC knows it has an uphill climb, but insists it remains committed to addressing issues relevant to black voters, said Telly Lovelace, hired in April as national director of African American Initiatives and Media.

I've run into a couple such people on internet discussion boards before (although they never want to disclose much). One guy who knew Karl Rove from High School, for instance, told me that he had always been ethically challenged - but refused to elaborate.

As far as Atwater, I certainly agree. I mean, that photo - taken during the '88 Republican Convention (in a conference room at the Hyatt, I believe) - took place just two and a half years before he succumbed.

My late grandmother (who died in her sleep at 91) mentioned that hatred and cancer were closely related. For a long time, my cynical side told me that was just an old wife's tale if you will; but people like Atwater remind one that there could be something to that.

He was literally unrecognizable in the last part of his life-- I didn't even know that was who I was looking at at first. I was going to post a photo but decided not to. Too awful.

I wouldn't wish what happened to him on anybody - not even him. But the same has happened to so many decent people (including a senior citizen friend of mine, who passed away last month), such that when it happens to someone who's sown so much hatred and, in a very real way, evil, one can't help but see a little cosmic justice in it.

Perhaps in his next lifetime, if you will, he'll be a better person. One can only hope.

Thanks for the link, ailsagirl. I'll check it out!

It's bullshit of course, but there already is some element of that in the African American community. It's the obvious divisive demagoguery.

I've been expecting Trump to go that way since the convention, and I will be very surprised if he doesn't try it.

Show from the 70s. I remember watching these series and looking forward to them as a kid in Ireland ! I was about 8 or 9 when I saw a non white person in the flesh for the first time. I remember standing and staring at this African nun from the Missions like some slack jawed yokel ! It was such a novelty. In Britain though, they had a lot of racial problems caused by the influx of Non white immigrants, so looking back on it, there were probably lots of racial undertones going on. There were still signs in British rental windows of "No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs".
