Union Leader of New Hampshire Endorses Gary Johnson Over Donald Trump

Source: The New York Times

When Donald J. Trump returns to campaign in New Hampshire on Thursday, he will be greeted by a familiar, if unwelcome, sight — a blistering attack on the front page of The Union Leader.

After assailing Mr. Trump on a regular basis leading up to the state’s primary, the venerable Union Leader, a conservative bulwark for generations, is now going a step further: For the first time in over 100 years, New Hampshire’s largest newspaper will not be endorsing the Republican nominee for president.

“The man is a liar, a bully, a buffoon,” wrote Joseph W. McQuaid, the Union Leader publisher, of Mr. Trump in a signed editorial. “He denigrates any individual or group that displeases him. He has dishonored military veterans and their families, made fun of the physically frail, and changed political views almost as often as he has changed wives.”

Rather than picking between what Mr. McQuaid termed “the lesser of two evils,” The Union Leader has bestowed its endorsement on Gary Johnson, the Libertarian nominee for president. Notably, the paper made clear that it was backing the entire Libertarian ticket, which includes William Weld, a former Massachusetts governor who is familiar to some New Hampshire voters.

An Editorial -- Joseph W. McQuaid, Publisher: A better choice for President (No need to hold your nose)

In 1972, Union Leader Publisher William Loeb found himself having to recommend either President Richard Nixon or challenger George McGovern.

Loeb’s advice: Hold your nose and vote for Nixon.

At least Loeb had a choice between two capable, if flawed, candidates. Godson of one President and personal friend to another, Loeb would not envy the choice America faces today between a selfish, self-centered, sanctimonious prig and Donald J. Trump.

Voters leaning toward Trump are understandably fed up with the status quo, of which Clinton is a prime example. But they kid themselves if they think Trump isn’t pretty much a part of that status quo as well, or that he is in any way qualified to competently lead this nation. -

Let's investigate Johnson's succezses as two term Gov of New Mexico. He not only will not win the Presidency but will ensure a Trump victory. .ost Ber ie supporyers are voting for Johnson because they learned crom ernie
to hate and to demand everything now selfishly for themselves. The Cato institute opposes regulation; instead proponents of 'voluntary' compliance. How well has worked out. Ask the redidents of Fint, MI. I'd vote for Chancey Gardner before Gary Johnsin. Also, shame on Maddow. Albert Speer was a nice person too. Down with entertainews and the peddlers thereof.

Just to be clear, it's a conservative print newspaper.

I agree, I never thought I'd see the day the paper Hunter S. Thomas called, "America's worst newspaper" declined to endorse the Republican candidate!

publication.

It's not about leaders of unions. It's about nutty, racist whackjobs. That paper went after Ed Muskie with a vengeance. Ugly fuckers. The guy who used to run that paper (dead now, mercifully) oozed vitriol towards Dems. When he died, a lot of the fire went out of that franchise, but they're still haters and they're gonna hate.

Here's the guy who "made" that paper what it is:

William Loeb's father, a stenographer, became secretary and a principle advisor to President Theodore Roosevelt and was one of his era's most powerful figures. Before he became known as the publisher of New Hampshire's only statewide newspaper, The Manchester Union Leader, William Loeb III tried many other careers. According to a recent documentary, "Poweful as Truth", Loeb sold quic- dry paint, surplus rum and puncture proof tires. Fiercely anti-Communist Loeb first purchased two Vermont papers, then became a key player in NH politics for three decades. Loeb may be best known for has scathing, conservative front page editorials and racist views. He derided Eisenhower, Kissinger, Kennedy and others in his vitriolic front-page editorials. In person, others say, he was charming and genteel. The rise of Loeb's notoriety was heightened by the growing importance of New Hampshire's first-in- the-nation presidential primary. Surprising to some, Loeb's legal residence was in Nevada and he lived primarily in a palatial home in Prides' Crossing, Mass. After his death, his wife Nackey Loeb took over as publisher until she died in 2000.
