Syria army announces offensive on rebel-held Aleppo
Source: AFP
Damascus (AFP) - Syria's army announced the launch Thursday of an offensive to retake the rebel-held east of the battleground city of Aleppo, warning residents to keep away from posts held by anti-regime fighters.
"The military operations command announces the start of operations in eastern districts of the city and calls on residents to stay away from the positions of terrorist groups," it said in a statement carried by state news agency SANA, using the regime's term for the opposition.
The announcement came just minutes after the United States and Russia convened a last-ditch meeting in New York to save their Syria ceasefire plan and followed several hours of intensive bombardment that left Aleppo in flames.
The army also said it would take "all measures to facilitate the reception" of civilians and that those who arrive at its checkpoints would not be arrested.

(1,333 posts)is able to rid Aleppo of all terrorists and opposition before the US is able to call for another ceasefire. Its funny how the US only sees it fit to call for ceasefires whenever the opposition is losing but stays mum when they are on the attack.
This is going to hurt but the Syrians have to stop listening to the Americans because this band aid that is the Syrian war has to be quickly pulled or else more people would suffer. They have to realize that the Americans who are only looking out for their best interests and not that of the Syrian people.

(55,445 posts)We shouldn't enter into any more negotiations...
and yet the Americans are the ones who keep calling for it and it just happens that they do it when ever the Syrian Army are gaining. Only a delusional person believes that the ceasefire which the west are to quick to pull somehow benefits the Syrian and their army people.
But we all know that some people would rather tow the party line that support real efforts to end atrocities committed by western backed be-headers in Syria. Sometimes I dream that racism and the idea that the US leadership is superior and should determine how other countries run their affairs (US hegemony) and then I read your posts and I wake up to reality.

(20,017 posts)that the "rebels" seemingly haven't gotten their hands on some shoulder-fired SAMs to try to take out some Russian and Syrian jets and helicopters dropping barrel bombs on Aleppo, hospitals, etc. I suppose the "backers" are reluctant to make them available for fear they could fall into the hands of ISIS.

(6,406 posts)..that Putin has already informed the west that if a shoulder fired SAM takes out a Russian Jet in Aleppo, he'll turn Aleppo to glass....and blame it on "nuclear proliferation".
With that said, many of the rebel groups have received "indirect" arms from other nations that we support. And sadly, some of it has gone to ISIS.
We were never committed to this war, with good reason. This was to benefit the house of Saud and Qatar with a pipeline...a repressive, human rights violator, tyrannical, etc. government would be replaced by a repressive, human right violator, tyrannical, etc. government. In other words, meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
The USA has enough black eyes in getting involved in lose-lose situations. Obama is just the first since Kennedy to say I'm not buying this bullshit and not going to get involved with a war that sends body bags to families for a country that's going to be from enemy to semi enemy.

(1,333 posts)Some of the "humanitarian" aid sent to the hungry "civilians" in eastern Aleppo!! Which explains why they refused inspection by the Syrians.

(347 posts)Just a suspicion though, and I might be 100% in the wrong. But it might be looking like a deal has been cut that would preserve Russia's influence in Syria, with Assads head in the balance. He is politically dead already and cannot play any role in Syria's future. That would explain the radio silence from the WH about what has unfolded over the past weeks. Something is in the works.
