It may be unfair of me to compare my cherished memories of growing up there with the sort of political realities I was unaware of as a kid. But I often wonder if Texas has taken a step backward, not from where it should be today, but even from where it was when I was young.

We attended my grandparents' Baptist church on Sundays when I was little, and the sermons were about love, mercy, forgiveness, and brotherhood.

My brother and I attended a service at the same church twenty years later, and the pastor was thundering hatred against gays, lesbians, liberals, pacifists, social justice movements, etc.

I realize that the unpleasant events convulsing Texas right now may just be the last gasp of a dying way of life; the petty, mean, hateful, selfish, distrusting way of life of the white power structure. And that we may be looking forward to a new True Blue Texas sometime in the future. But it can't come soon enough.

What socioeconomic factors are you claiming increase the Texas homicide rate? Would they possibly be partly due to Texas's deplorable habit of electing far too many Republicans? That would be the kind of thing that people wish to leave behind.

What 'facts' are you planning on stating? I gave the facts about the homicide rates, showing Washington is better, although you'd called that 'bullshit'.

'Leave behind' comes from the use of "leave that fucking shit in Texas" in reply #1 - the one you replied to.

Texas is doing poorly on gun control. For instance, the idiotic new university campus gun law. That kind of thing is a factor in the murder rate.

Oh, hang on, now I get it - you're whining that you're white, and you think that's an excuse for having a high homicide rate. No, it's not. No one is blaming your rate on you being white, either.

I just pointed out Washington has, objectively, a better record on murder than Texas, which you claimed wasn't true.

"I know exactly who you intensely dislike in Texas" - you don't know shit, frankly. I didn't say anything about not liking Texans (apart from, arguably, Republicans). But if you think you are helping any democratic cause by "pointing out who is committing a large part of the crime in Texas" by saying "I'm white, it's not my fault", you're mistaken. Because you are parroting a Trump talking point there. I will admit I don't like people who blame minorities for crime.

I can see why you think your posts might get hidden. They are deplorable. Have you thought of getting out of the basket?

So when you bring up Texas, I know EXACTLY who you are talking about. And you know it, too. Don't even bother to deny it.

It's people like you who don't live here who push so many white folks to the Republican party.

Do you really think that when you all make fun of Texas, or Florida, or any other state in the south, you aren't directing your vitriol at one group of people - white folks? Do you really fucking think you are going to help turn the south blue? I know so many Republicans who are "this close" to voting for Hillary, but, unfortunately, shit comments like yours do nothing to endear them to the Democratic Party.

(And if you understood how socioeconomic factors affect crime, you would understand why Texas and California, for instance, differs greatly in crime rates from states like Montana and Maine.)

about the murder rate which you had called 'bullshit'. After that, you started on the "don't blame whites, blame minorities for Texas murders" shit which it's appalling to see trotted out on DU. I didn't say anything at all about ethnicity - it was you.

Your comments are the worst sort of race-based fearmongering. They are exactly what Trump supporters say. My comment was "Texas has a higher murder rate than Washington", but you tried to take that as blaming white people, and then decided to blame non-white people instead. Pointing out a simple fact has caused you to explode like Trump on a bad day.

Burlington gun attack: Four women shot dead at US shopping centre

Four women have been shot dead and a man critically injured at a shopping centre in Burlington, Washington state.

Police have released a picture of the suspected gunman, who fled the scene armed with a rifle.

The Cascade Mall and nearby shops have been evacuated and police have asked the public to stay away. The motive for the attack is not clear.

The suspect, described as a "Hispanic male wearing grey", was seen heading towards the Interstate 5 motorway.

Five dead in Washington state mall shooting, gunman on the run

Los Angeles (AFP) - Police were searching Saturday for a gunman who killed five people during a shooting at a mall in the US state of Washington, amid a raging national debate over gun control.

Four women and one man were killed, police said in an updated toll. The man had been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but died there, police spokesman Sergeant Mark Francis said.

Authorities say there was only one shooter in Friday night's attack at Cascade Mall in Burlington, located about 70 miles (110 kilometers) north of Seattle, describing him as a Hispanic male wearing a gray shirt.

Police released a closely cropped still from video surveillance of the young-looking suspect showing only his head and torso, though the full picture, published by local media, showed him holding what appeared to be a rifle.
