Santa Cruz Mountains: Large fire near Loma Prieta burns hundreds of acres, forces evacuations
Source: San Jose Mercury
SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS A huge wildfire producing flames visible from miles around has burned upward of 500 acres and threatened hundreds of homes in the Santa Cruz Mountains around Loma Prieta, forcing evacuations as multiple Cal Fire strike teams and other local agencies rushed to contain it Monday afternoon.
The Loma Fire was reported at 2:42 p.m. on Loma Chiquita Road near Loma Prieta Road on the southern edge of Santa Clara County at a site nearly equidistant between Highway 17 and Highway 101.
Firefighters were battling 100-degree temperatures, heavy vegetation and steep terrain in their efforts to corral the fire, which was at 0 percent containment as of 5:20 p.m. The southeast-moving blaze has the potential to burn 1,000 acres, authorities said.

It's still 0% contained. No evacuation order for my area yet (about 9 miles from fire).

I saw 6 tankers, including a DC-10 in the air today. Last I heard there were about 300 structures threatened, but that was a while ago. A major concern is the large number of communication facilities on Loma Prieta (of earthquake fame). NOAA has shut down their radar until further notice.
